Sponsored this week by the Mermaid’s Arts Market – 1st & 3rd Saturdays through Spring
Dancing through life, today a local dance teacher exclaimed, “Mexico already smells like cempasúchil, copal, incense, mezcal, food, tobacco, memories… it smells like Día de Muertos, we are ready to receive our loved ones. This is a beautiful Celebration of LIFE, a great moment to share our Culture!” Indeed, through candlelight and sugar skulls, this weekend marks traditional “Day of the Dead” celebrations across Mexico. In our corner of the country, engulfed by further Halloween fervor on Oct. 31st, US and Mexico cultures fuse to create a mood of celebration and remembrance. Families will make their way to one of the three local cemeteries to visit the dearly departed by sprucing up tombs, sharing music, laughter, and food – while others will set up altars at home or in local shops, with a loved one’s favorite food or drink of choice at the forefront. Here’s a look at events around town, and those coming up.
