First same-sex marriage in 2017 expected in April
By José Antonio Perez.
April 2017. Civil Registrar Claudia Lugo Gámez indicated the first same-sex marriage of 2017 may take place this April, making this the second official same-sex marriage in Puerto Peñasco since 2016, and the first between two women. While the Sonora State Constitution does not allow for same-sex unions, which caused the couple’s first petition to be denied, they have pursued a writ of amparo (protection of rights) which does have precedent. The Civil Registrar noted marriage between two women of the same sex has the same validity and characteristics as a marriage between a heterosexual couple. The first legal same-sex marriage in Puerto Peñasco took place April 23, 2016.

By José Antonio Perez
April 13, 2017. While unable to land a deal to renew commercial flights to Puerto Peñasco for Semana Santa, local Convention and Visitors Bureau President (OCV) Héctor Vázquez del Mercado indicates conversations to renew flights by the Summer are still ongoing. He furthered there have been talks with Aeromar, TAR, and Aero Calafia, among other, which represent attractive options both for the airlines and service providers in Puerto Peñasco. The idea, he detailed, is to create an alternative which includes the airlines, OCV, and both the municipal and state governments to provide a base in order to offer competitive rates that would allow for the permanence of an aerial route to either Ciudad Juárez or Tijuana, for example.
