Swim. Bike. Run. Salud!! Las Palomas Triathlon

This past weekend in Rocky Point, superheroes adorning wetsuits, caps, and yes even some with masks and capes, once again demonstrated their athletic prowess at the Las Palomas Triathlon. In waves of colorful caps, beginning with the Olympic distance competitors, triathletes began venturing out into the Sea of Cortez around 10 a.m. on Saturday morning and in subsequent groups all amazingly organized by event coordinators from Red Rock Co. Out in the water, Tammy and Roland from Kayak Rocky Point were on hand, along with volunteer lifeguards from ASU, to make sure all swimmers made their rounds safely before heading back to shore.

After all triathlete competitors headed to the bike course, it was time for the 5K and 10K runs through the rolling hills of the Las Palomas golf course, The Links. Runners and triathletes of all ages replaced golfcarts and clubs for the day, taking over the paths and greens spreading out to the north of Las Palomas.  On the final leg out of the golf course, all the athletes made their way through final stretches of sand to the Finish Line where a welcome inflated Slip-n-Slide awaited, along with cheers, applause, and a not too shabby fiesta!

Las Palomas TriathlonRed Rock Co., a multi-sports production company from AZ, has been putting on the Las Palomas Triathlon for the past 7 years and this year gave initial reports there were about 700 athletes signed up. Organizers say that while the majority of athletes taking part in the Las Palomas Triathlon, plus 5K/10K events, are from Arizona, athletes are making their way to Puerto Peñasco’s beaches from across the Southwest and beyond and the number of participants from Mexico itself is also growing. For example, the group TriZon from Hermosillo could be seen recuperating and relaxing after the big day’s events, plus when prizes were awarded we heard a woman from Mexicali had won her category! Plus, our own local amigo Juan Carlos Meza took 2nd in his 5K event!! Felicidades!  The Red Rock crew enthusiastically cheered on all competitors, and particularly a 79-year old athlete who brought up the tail end of the race and then plopped down on the slip-n-slide before getting up for his pictures.  Congratulations!!

Las Palomas TriathlonAlong with the fiesta that ensued across the lawns, pools, and out on the beach by Phase I of Las Palomas, numerous awards were handed out across all categories –with prizes going three deep. Award winners took home tequila from Peñasco’s own Tequila Factory, or baskets of goodies from Dick’s Margarita Mix out of Tucson. Salud!  As part of efforts to give back to the local Puerto Peñasco community, Red Rock organizers presented donations to the local Fire Department and Public Safety, who were out on the course providing assistance throughout the day. In addition, funds and donations of non-perishable food and clothes were collected for the local DIF (Office on Integral Family Development).  See, I told you they were superheroes!
