Successful and Fun 2nd Annual Sand Castle Event for Casa Hogar

By José Antonio Pérez

The second annual sand castle contest meant to raise funds for the José Dávalos Valdivia Casa Hogar home for the elderly, successfully met its goal on Saturday, August 18th in a family friendly environment on Playa Hermosa.

Santiago Ruiz Hurtado, President of the Casa Hogar board, detailed this year’s event included 10 teams, ranging from students, to local service clubs, and general members of the local community.  He added the contest consists of building a sand castle measuring at least 1 meter high within the time given, but participants also took part in other beach activities (for extra team points), which gave the day a feeling of harmony and fun.

First place in the overall competition, with 11 points, was the team “La Familia”, while 2nd place went to the Peñasco Rotary Club with 9 points. Curiously, flag height was not included in this year’s measurements.

Ruiz highlighted that anyone who would like to donate a little bit of their time in helping others is invited to the institution to join their volunteer program, or to take part in other activities that would help the home.  Ruiz and his team of volunteers, who also organize the widely popular Charanga “Soap Box” Derby in the Spring are now working on a children’s version for this Fall  More info at: Asilo Puerto Peñasco
