Sand. Skate. Fish. Movies. Weekend Rundown 4/13 – 4/15

Another week has flown by and the crowds from Semana Santa have dwindled away, but that doesn’t hold back the action around Rocky Point!

flyer-para-casting-479x620 Sand. Skate. Fish. Movies. Weekend Rundown 4/13 - 4/15Here’s a quick rundown to plan your fin de semana here in town. First, on Saturday and Sunday there will be castings held at the offices of the Convention and Visitors Bureau here in town (Plaza Fremont on Blvd. Fremont, across from Bancomer) from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. for actors to appear in the upcoming Chavez film (directed by Diego Luna and co-produced by Gael Garcia Bernal and John Malkovich) that will be filmed in Sonora through the rest of the Spring.  Casting personnel are particularly looking for men and women, hombres 25 – 70, women 30ish – 40ish, so stop by the OCV offices this weekend for your pictures and an improv moment.

Around town there’s the second stage of the CBSC (Cholla Bay Sportsmen’s Club) Fishing Derby. Sign up at the Radio Room by the scale on the beach in front of JJ’s cantina.  Out in the sand, the 1st Thunder on the Beach 150 will be going on, put on by the Arizona Desert Race Association and folks from Thunder on the Beach. This evening we could see a number of off-road sand racing machines coming into town, so go check out their dust by the Thunder on the Beach course behind Sandy Beach (near the Reef).

Not fishing or kicking up sand? How about skateboarding?  The 3rd Annual Skateboarding Event of Puerto Penasco’s own Atomic Crew Skate team will be sliding across the malecon on Saturday, from noon to 7 p.m. with an after party at BooBar! Skate on!

Other items on the weekend line-up include the Farmers/Art Market behind Don Julio’s (turn right one block after Banorte bank on Blvd. Freemont), Natural History Talks @ CEDO, a spay and neuter clinic over by Shrimp park (Fri & Sat), possibly volleyball out on Sandy Beach, and baseball with the local Tiburones squad taking on San Luis Rio Colorado from Friday thru Sunday nights (games around 7).

Roads:  Looks like paving work from Calle 13 toward Playa Bonita is wrapped up for now, leaving a pretty smooth surface! Road is paved up to El Establo horse rides.  The Old Port is accessible both in and out, woo hoo! Road work continues along Blvd. Fremont as they continue working to broaden this part of town from 2 to 4 lanes – however, now it’s easier to get over and park by Plaza del Sol (by Chef Mickey’s and Acqua Spa) plus Alejandro Portugal’s insurance office.  As always, watch for potholes (sigh) and bumpy surfaces to and fro.

Upcoming events?  Check out our Event Calendar!!!  Coming next weekend:  SADR Sand & Storm 300, 1 Club Open @ JJs, Family Day @ CEDO (for Earth Day!), Old Boys Social Club Annual Bash & BBQ in Cholla Bay, plus baseball earlier in the week (Tues  Thurs).
