It’s been about a week since our lives in Rocky Point were sent into a tailspin as both the State of Sonora and the local administration launched preventive health campaigns in an effort to combat Covid-19 –  #QuedateEnCasa (Stay at Home) and “Fuerza Peñasco” (Peñasco Strong).  One by one, local businesses first announced reduced hours, then movie theaters and bars closed, along with several restaurants. Still, a number of spots continue to offer dining opportunities via take-out or curbside pick-up, and even some with limited and socially distant seating.

Ongoing restaurant updates (as info becomes available):  #ConsumeLocal #SupportLocalBusiness

We look out at the nearly empty streets and beaches of Puerto Peñasco at a time between Spring Break and Semana Santa that would usually be anticipating the arrival of thousands of visitors. Yet, as for so many across the globe, we are caught in a daze though with an urging almost blinding need to react.  Local organizations, churches, institutions, city offices, and individuals are looking for ways to help the community for what will be the short-, mid-, and long-term.  Here are some ways you can be involved:

DIF – “En Peñasco le damos lata al Covid-19” Non-perishable food drive for the elderly – Staff from DIF will pick up items from your home so you don’t need to go out.  Call 383-6145  8 am – 6 pm

AIM Peñasco / Steps of Love – In response to these unprecedented times, the educational program is shifting their focus to providing basic needs for families through food items and educational packets.  This coordinated effort with the local Lion’s Club seeks to expand the ability to offer food options throughout the community.  More information here:  AIM Peñasco Plan for Support

Rotary Club of Puerto Peñasco (CR Mar de Peñasco, AC) – In anticipating the dire need for material within the health care sector, the local Rotary Club is examining several options to provide appropriate masks for community health centers, the General Hospital, and other health care facilities as able.  For more information or to see how you can help, please contact the Rotary Club via Facebook at Club Rotario Mar de Peñasco  email:  clubrotariopuertopenasco@gmail.com
