Paving next to La Milla begins

Aug. 3, 2017. This past week, work to pave Calle José S. Healy next to the city’s “Milla” sports complex began. The nearly 5 million peso investment is for 11,200 sq. meters of asphalt, reports Public Projects Coordinator Terencio Gutiérrez Valenzuela. In addition to addressing the need to improve this well-traveled street between Blvd. Juarez and Blvd. Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez, this will cut down on dust impacting those who pursue recreational activities at La Milla. Work is to include construction of new pavement, repaving in some stretches, curbs and sidewalks.

Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. August 1, 2017. Work to fully repave Blvd. Josefa Ortiz de Dominguez has advanced about 85%, reported Public Projects Coordinator Terencio Gutiérrez Valenzuela, adding work has progressed as scheduled so the community can be certain this will be completed within the programmed period. The first phase of the repaving work extends from Blvd. Lopez Portillo to Blvd. Sonora, at a cost of 9.89 million pesos.
Red Cross services up 50%

The high 2017 tourism season has led to a 50% increase in services at the Puerto Peñasco Red Cross, with reports of more than 4000 different types of care in the last four months (March thru July). Of these, just over 2000 were for emergency services at the Red Cross itself, and another 2000 were for ambulance services. Puerto Peñasco Red Cross Board President, Julio César Valenzuela, noted the increase in services also stems from the Red Cross being able to respond to every emergency call that comes in, as they have the staff, vehicles, and fuel to do so.
3rd paramedic class at Red Cross about to graduate

The Puerto Peñasco Red Cross aims to certify all staff and volunteers in emergency medical care, with a third paramedic class about to complete their studies and a 4th programmed to begin shortly. EMT Coordinator Miguel Ángel Ibarra Lomelí noted since the paramedic school at the Red Cross has seen sustained growth since it began in 2014, which goes hand in hand with the city’s growth and increased demands for emergency services.
Season opens for shark, manta ray and crab

Beginning August 1st, the closed season on crab, shark, and manta ray implemented in May has been lifted. The measure was meant to protect species during their reproduction and growth period in areas of the Pacific Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, detailed the Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fishing, and Feed (SAGARPA).
Hermenegildo Ramírez Lopez, local head of the Federal Fishing Office, affirmed these protective strategies have shown to be positive and led to notable improvements in yields. Furthermore, shark and manta ray populations have been replenished. He noted with the closure lifted at least 60 boats would begin fishing for these valuable resources, which have always been strong in permitting Puerto Peñasco to contribute to national levels.
