Puerto Peñasco’s tourism growth continues in summer

The beaches of Puerto Peñasco have seen a 5% growth in tourism from the U.S. during the month of July, which could close out with nearly 280,000 visitors.

According to info provided by the local Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV), July has had 70 to 75% occupancy rates at beachfront hotels, with many weekends reporting to be completely full. This represents a 5% increase over the same period last year.

OCV President Héctor Vázquez del Mercado notes this coming weekend is important for tourism in Puerto Peñasco, with thousands of visitors from the U.S. enjoying their remaining vacation weeks, along with numerous Mexican tourists principally from Baja California, Chihuahua, and Sonora.

Vázquez del Mercado indicated July numbers show about 75% of tourists coming from abroad, with the remaining coming directly from Mexico.  He added the percentage of national tourism will begin to grow this coming week as Mexican families recover from graduation costs.

During August, the majority of tourists to the area tend to be from Mexicali and Tijuana in Baja California, as well as from the state of Chihuahua and areas across Sonora, with an expected 50% hotel occupancy rate which represents about 200,000 visitors for the month.
