Puerto Peñasco receives Level II Sustainable Beach Certification

By Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV)

The Mexican Institute of Standardization and Certification recently acknowledged Puerto Peñasco’s Sandy Beach as the longest Level II recreational sustainable beach in the country.  Members of Puerto Peñasco’s Clean Beach Committee attended the National Sustainable Beaches Gathering held August 22nd in Mexico City, where they were presented with this most recent certificate.

Puerto Peñasco’s Level II certification comes two years after having been awarded the “White Flag” as a sustainable beach and compliance with a series of regulations and strict standards regarding cleanliness, safety, and environmental education.  Those involved in the certification process have included resorts along Sandy Beach starting from Playa Bonita and the Playa Bonita RV Park to the condominium complexes of Sonoran Sky, Puerta Privada, and Las Palomas Beach & Golf Resort.  Environmental groups, civil society and schools from all academic levels, along with business leaders and the local government also played an important part in achieving Level II certification.

Marcia Ortega Morales and Luis Cesar García of the local Clean Beaches Committee were presented with the certificate acknowledging Puerto Peñasco’s Level II sustainable clean beach certification. At the gathering, the two Clean Beach Committee members also presented a talk on the success of regulations when working toward sustainable beach certification in Puerto Peñasco.

This acknowledgment, in addition to offering safety and peace of mind to beach-goers consisting of tourists and residents alike, encourages society to comply with regulations while keeping this beach clean, along with all others throughout Puerto Peñasco.

The certified sustainable beach stretches 1522 meters along Sandy Beach, and is only surpassed by a Level III beach in Tamaulipas.  Sandy Beach is currently the only certified clean beach in Sonora.
