Proposal to expand Casa Hogar home for the elderly

By José Antonio Pérez

An expansion project for the José Dávalos Valdivia Home for the Elderly has been in the works since last year, given the home is already filled to capacity and has a waiting list that exceeds 50%.

Santiago Ruiz Hurtado, Board President for the home, detailed currently there are 23 residents living at Casa Hogar, though just this year they have received petitions for 35 more potential residents who have been placed on a waiting list. Ruiz Hurtado noted there are people from other parts of Sonora on this waiting list, though principally from Puerto Peñasco and Sonoyta.

Santiago, who has been key in organizing popular fundraisers such as the soap-box derby, “little red-riding hood” race, and a yearly sand castle competition, detailed the home has been functioning well during the first 4 months of the current year, but the need for an expansion is still ever present. He added the reality is that contributions from the community are still needed in order to adequately keep the home operating.
