Private investments being considered to accelerate construction on Home Port

By José Antonio Pérez

To accelerate work on stalled construction of the Puerto Peñasco Home Port, Municipal Economic Development Coordinator Jorge Valdes Felix explained project supervisors are optimistic as the Federal government is expected to make a 13 million dollar investment into the project this Spring. Yet, even with this hefty investment, at least another 32 million is needed, which is why the Sonoran state and municipal administrations have reached out to at least one cruise company in England, and Grupo Vidanta, among others interested in investing.

Valdés noted such an endeavor would represent changes in creating a public-private alliance, though money would be able to flow more easily into the project and possibly even lead to earlier completion.  Any partnership regarding the Home Port must first be approved by the Secretary of Communications & Transport (SCT), to ensure that cruises departing from Puerto Peñasco are attractive for visitors from Arizona, California, and New Mexico, and across the southwestern part of the U.S.
