Among the different organizations in Puerto Peñasco, over the years there have been a number of efforts to address the stray dog and cat population in the city. One organization, the Animal Adoption Center of Rocky Point, under the leadership of Nancy Phelan, has been in operation for a number of years.
Another relatively new effort is Pet Effect, founded in 2011 by Ariadna Zavala, with the goal of creating awareness in the community of Rocky Point about abandoned and abused pets. As Ariadna explains, “There is still a big problem with the pet population and abuse in all of Mexico and Rocky Point is no different. Many dogs and cats are seen on the streets struggling to survive and are often badly abused…It is heartbreaking to see these lovable innocent creatures treated like this when all they want is to survive and love whoever is willing to take them in.”
Pet Effect has successfully established a temporary shelter in town, with plans for a much larger space that can potentially hold most stray pets from the streets. Ariadna explains through their pet adoption program they are dedicated to teaching locals the importance of being responsible pet owners and what this entails. All of the pets they rescue from the streets are spayed/neutered and receive the appropriate medical treatment as needed. Ariadna tells us Pet Effect provides the animals with food, water and a comfortable living condition until the right person/family takes them in. She asks for others to become involved with the project, and in adoption, stating that “With your help we can make a big difference and give these loving creatures the life that every pet deserves.”
Pet Effect is currently looking for:
Food (Purina Dog Show: Puppy & Adult) preferably.
Veterinarians willing to help spay/neuter
People interested in pet adoption
