Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. April 7, 2016. With the backing of Mayor Kiko Munro and participation of nearly 800 athletes from teams representing California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, and Nevada along with Baja California, Chihuahua, Sinaloa, Puebla, and Sonora, Puerto Peñasco hosted an International Tae Kwon Do Tournament this past weekend.
On behalf of the mayor, Municipal Sports Director Marco Antonio Rubio Nieblas explained the Mayor’s intent is that Puerto Peñasco become the best tourist destination on the Sea of Cortez, which is why it is important to support these types of athletic events as yet another way the city is becoming a space for special events.
Organizers, represented by Tae Kwon Do Global Alliance President Sergio Camacho along with Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau President Héctor Vázquez del Mercado, explained the Puerto Peñasco EXPO Convention Center was the site of the International Tae Kwon Do Tournament on Saturday, April 9th, where nearly 150 schools from approximately 20 Tae Kwon Do associations from both Mexico and the U.S. competed.
Competitors selected from this international tournament will go on to compete at the regional event to be held later in April.
