Peñasco eyes reopening of beaches come August

In preparation for beaches to reopen, Peñasco strengthens equipment for Public Safety and ZOFEMAT

Puerto Peñasco mayor Kiko Munro presented vehicles and equipment today meant to strengthen Municipal Public Safety and the Office of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT), in preparation for the upcoming reopening of beaches, anticipated for August 1st.

The mayor detailed the vehicles, including two patrol cars donated by Pima County in Arizona through mediation of the US Consulate in Nogales, and three all-terrain RZRs  along with radio equipment, represents an investment of nearly 1.4 million pesos. He added that one of the patrol vehicles has been designated specifically to the Youth Patrol, state headquarters of which is precisely here in Puerto Peñasco.

As to the RZRs and radio equipment for the Federal Maritime Land Zone Office (ZOFEMA) the mayor explained these come from a second ministering from the Federal Zone fund, total investment projection of which is 15 million pesos.

He detailed the ZOFEMAT resources also include the purchase of five ATVs, three 4×4 pick-ups, a backhoe, trailer with hydraulic platform, hydraulic lifeguard tower, and two jetskis – to be delivered in the coming days. He recalled in December of last year, they also delivered a front loading double traction tractor, along with a beach sweeper, and twenty-on 1100 liter trash cans.

“This is part of the equipment we are getting in order to be ready for the date we’ve set of August 1st, in conjunction with the Federal Government, to start to activate and enjoy our beaches,” announced the mayor.

The mayor emphasized they seek to strongly enforce the new Municipal Ordinance for Beach Use, and will use all the infrastructure that has been at the sanitary filter at the entrance to town.

“The goal is to keep a controlled count on entry of persons, use of thermal cameras, sanitizing tunnel, and other strategies, to ensure responsible use of beaches as we do not want to see what has happened in other parts of the world, particularly on the beaches of Florida and Texas, leading to a spread of Covid-19 due to opening without any type of protocols or safety measures,” emphasized Munro.

The mayor stressed the main interest is to make sure people in this port use the beaches in an orderly, controlled, and responsible manner.

“We are improving equipment and infrastructure to beautify tourist areas to ensure that Puerto Peñasco continues to stand out and carve its place as the main tourist destination in northern Mexico, and obviously the main spot to visit for our neighbors to the North,” he concluded.
