Looking to soak in sea, sand, nature, sunsets, and Latin beats this weekend in Rocky Point? Look no further than the Music for the Sea benefit concert at the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO), located in Las Conchas on the east side of town.  Though the Gran Concierto will fill the stage on Saturday night, Oct 1st, the seaside musical journey gets started on Friday, Sept. 30th at CEDO with an acoustic set aptly named “Orkesta Acústica” starting at 7 p.m.  On Saturday, doors for the main concert open at 5 pm, with music starting at 6 p.m. just in time to take in a phenomenal sunset over the Sea of Cortez to the sweet sounds of Salvador Duran.

Headlining the wave of music and rhythms across our shores nestled into the Sea of Cortez this weekend is Orkesta Mendoza, a Latin music band from Tucson founded by singer and guitarist Sergio Mendoza in 2009. In what has been dubbed “indie mambo”, the band combines cumbias, rancheras, and indie rock through Latin percussion and steel guitars.

Puerto Peñasco’s own Agua de Coco, known by visitors and residents alike for bringing everyone to the salsa floor from sultry summer days to chilly winter evenings, joins the extensive list of artists for Saturday’s main concert along with Quetzal Guerrero (salsa, Brazilian, jazz), Brian Lopez (internationally acclaimed guitarist/singer/songwriter), Tati Crespo, Mariachi Nuevo Azteca de Tucson, Salvador Duran (Mexican gypsy troubadour), Tucson’s Golden Boots, and more.

“This concert, along with all the weekend activities,” detailed CEDO Executive Director Nelida Barajas, “aims to encourage people to reconnect with CEDO – both locals and visitors.  We’ve all been through a few challenging years, and invite people to revisit, reconnect and rediscover the environmental goals of CEDO in empowering local fishing communities, being coastal stewards, and sharing the wonder of the region through our Naturarte programs.”

Charlie Levy, concert promoter and organizer with vast experience from Crescent Ballroom, The Van Buren as well as Valley Bar (Phoenix), first brought the idea of “Music for the Sea” to CEDO when exploring how he could best donate his talents to further CEDO’s goals of offering environmental and community solutions that recognize cultural, socio-economic, and biological interconnections between Mexico and the U.S.  “I’m no biologist,” Charlie joked, “but I know how to organize concerts and that’s how I can share my talents.  Everyone can share by just coming out, and be sure to have fun! 100% of the proceeds will go to CEDO.”

Tickets still available online at: www.musicforthesea.mx  and at the door Sept. 30th and Oct. 1st
