Municipalities throughout Sonora on “Norbert” alert

Hurricane Norbert located in front of the coasts of Baja California Sur has caused the Sonoran Civil Protection Unit to issue green alerts for 13 municipalities across the southern part of the state, along with a blue alert for Hermosillo and a number of other municipalities. Puerto Peñasco has been placed under the “blue” preventative level.

Carlos de Jesús Arias, director of the State Civil Protection Unit, explains the green alert is to notify the three levels of government to review procedures and plans for temporary shelters, as well as to review inventory of both human and material resources.

On Thursday morning, the Port Captain from Guaymas issued an alert to close navigation for smaller vessels, yachts and shrimp boats given the proximity of Norbert to the Baja California peninsula.

Norbert is currently parallel to the western coasts of Baja California Sur and moving in a northwesterly directly, with maximum sustained speeds of 130 KM/hr as a category 1 hurricane.
