Mexican Moonshine

A weekend with RCPM in Rocky Point Part II

Our “weekend with Mexican Moonshine and RCPM” wasn’t just about Saturday night at JJ’s Cantina in Cholla Bay. It all started on Thursday evening, Jan. 26, when RCPM and Mexican Moonshine promoters Greg, Dan, and Keara brought the band to Latitude 31 in town where owners Mike and Cindy had set up a tasting for the launch of Roger’s new Silver tequila. As Roger describes it, whereas the earlier Reposado Mexican Moonshine has more of a sweet buttery taste, the Silver is earthy, clean, and possesses “more of a smolder than a burn.” This ain’t no shooting tequila amigos, this is the real sipping kind. Greg Ross, one of the Mexican Moonshine promoters, adds the idea Roger has with these tequilas is precisely “celebration not inebriation.”

Both tequilas are carefully crafted in Tequila, Jalisco and, as Roger explains, are of the highest quality. The Reposado version of Mexican Moonshine was actually chosen as a 2011 “Best of the Best” by Tequila.net, an “online community of aficionados and consumers who enjoy the unique flavors and characteristics of Tequila, Mezcal, and other Spirits of Mexico.”

Here in Rocky Point, Mexican Moonshine is available at the Tequila Factory (near Banco Serfin) as well as in a number of popular watering holes including Wrecked (where Roger played a solo show on Jan. 27th), Latitude 31, Chango’s, and JJ’s to name a few – plus, hopefully it’ll be found soon in other restaurants around town following this tasting. It is already widely available in Arizona and in various spots around the country, particularly where Roger and the band put on shows that draw the “faithful.”

As mentioned earlier, the bottom of the bottle is perfect for CDs that often come with it, plus Roger tells us it’s a great shape so it won’t fall over on the table. Point taken. Each bottle also comes with a QR code on the tag that when scanned takes you to the RCPM site to hear their new album Unida Cantina. (…to be continued…)
