Puerto Peñasco saw an estimated 40 million peso boost in revenue over the recent US Memorial Day weekend, reaffirming optimism for a good summer season, affirmed local Convention and Visitors Bureau president Héctor Vázquez del Mercado.

Reports indicated 90% occupancy levels at area hotels, and an influx of 35,000 tourists over the popular U.S. holiday.

In the past five years, detailed Vázquez del Mercado, the flow of tourism over U.S. Memorial Day has been constant and stable, though the desire is to continue strengthening the destination’s competitivity.  He noted the urgency to broaden the Lukeville-Sonoyta border crossing area to facilitate vehicle crossings, particularly when returning to the U.S.  He added the positive balance in the area of safety reaffirms results of the Lukeville-Puerto Peñasco Safety Corridor.

The president of the local Convention and Visitors Bureau lauded ongoing growth tendencies in overall tourism to Puerto Peñasco, noting a 2 to 3% increase in 2019 so far.
