Puerto Peñasco, Sonora. June 10, 2019

In commemoration of World Environment Day on June 5th, the Office of Ecology and Sustainable Development launched the No es el plástico, eres tú (It’s not plastic, it’s you) environmental awareness campaign with formal delivery of four containers aimed at recycling plastic and batteries, as well as collection of cigarette butts and plastic tops.

“We are obligated to establish foundations for the new Peñasco we all want for our future generations,” stated the mayor, “through public policies to reduce the use of plastics; this initiative aims to reduce the use of straws and single use plastic bags at convenience stores by 70%.”

Ecology and Sustainable Development Director Pedro Miguel Romero López explained that on June 5, 1974, the United Nations first commemorated World Environment Day with the goal of reflecting and acting on countering the adverse effects caused to the environment on a global scale.

He further announced a project to build a municipal plant nursery, as promoted by the mayor, which would develop regional trees and vegetation in order to contribute to improving air quality, urban image, and reforestation of green areas across the city.
