Governor Padres and SEMARNAT Secretary unveil plaque at Pinacate Biosphere Reserve

IMG_6256-620x413 Governor Padres and SEMARNAT Secretary unveil plaque at Pinacate Biosphere ReserveA plaque commemorating the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and Grand Desert of Altar as a UNESCO World Heritage Site was unveiled on Wednesday, Oct. 31st at the main entrance to the Schuk Toak Visitors Center.

The plaque unveiling was done by Sonora Governor Guillermo Padrés, along with Mexico’s Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT), Juan José Guerra Abud, who to the surprise of all arrived at the event via a State helicopter which landed just a short walk from a large tent where invited guests anxiously awaited.

Given the naming of the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and Grand Desert of Altar as a World Heritage site, it was further selected as host for the 2013 National Natural Conservation Awards, which also took place at the event. Awards were given out to winners of the best projects submitted to the 2013 Natural Conservation contest, further marking the end of National Conservation Week across the country.

During the event, various speeches were given as to the protection of natural areas and particularly to the recently celebrated area of the Pinacate. Similarly, it was expressed this honor is a source of pride for Sonora, and for Mexico, now that a spot of such natural beauty as that found at the Pinacate forms part of the list of World Heritage Sites.

IMG_6291-620x413 Governor Padres and SEMARNAT Secretary unveil plaque at Pinacate Biosphere ReserveThough the presentation of speeches lasted over 40 minutes, those in attendance, which also included students from elementary through college, remained seated throughout the ceremony. At the end there was also a short presentation of dance rituals performed by a group of women from the Tohono O’odham nation.

Following the official awards ceremony, Governor Padrés along with SEMARNAT Secretary Juan José Guerra Abud, Luis Fuello McDonald of the National Commission for Natural Protected Areas (CONANP), Puerto Peñasco Mayor Gerardo Figueroa Zazueta, Sonoyta Mayor Julio César Ramírez, and Tohono O’odham Governor Alicia Choihua walked through the Visitors Center, which also marked the inauguration of the Center’s interactive museum.

A brief press conference from atop the Center’s patio included the presentation of a check totaling 39,560,400 pesos for continued road work including the broadening of Blvd. Juarez.

Governor Padrés and SEMARNAT Secretary Guerra Abud boarded the State helicopter once again upon departing the Schuk Toak Visitors Center, which was followed by a fly over the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve, leaving those remaining (including cars and buses) in a cloud of dust.

Develación de placa de reconocimiento del Pinacate como Patrimonio de la Humunidad

La placa en la que lleva impreso el reconocimiento para el área del Pinacate como un bien patrimonial para la humanidad por la UNESCO fue develada a un lado de la puerta principal de Centro de Visitantes “Shuck Toak” el miércoles pasado.

Dicho acto fue realizado por el Gobernador de Sonora Guillermo Padrés y el Secretario del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales (SEMARNAT), Juan José Guerra Abud quienes para asombro de los asistentes a este evento, arribaron en un helicóptero del Gobierno del Estado que aterrizó a unos metros de la carpa donde se encontraban los invitados.

IMG_6232-620x413 Governor Padres and SEMARNAT Secretary unveil plaque at Pinacate Biosphere ReserveLa Biosfera del Pinacate y Gran desierto de Altar a propósito de su nombramiento como patrimonio mundial fue elegida como sede para la celebración de la Semana Nacional de la Conservación ahí se entregaron los premios a los mejores proyectos dentro del certamen para la Conservación de la naturaleza 2013.

Durante el evento se ofrecieron discursos alusivos a la protección de las áreas naturales protegidas en especial a la recién galardonada área del Pinacate también se expresó el orgullo que representa para los sonorenses y para México el que un lugar de belleza natural como lo es el Pinacate forme parte de la lista de los bienes de patrimonio para la humanidad.

Aunque la presentación duró mas de 40 minutos los asistentes incluidos estudiantes de primarias y jóvenes de universidad se mantuvieron en sus lugares hasta que finalizó el evento donde también se hizo una pequeña presentación de cantos y rituales por mujeres de la etnia Tohono O’odham.

Entre los invitados hizo presencia la actriz reconocida por su trabajo como villana en algunas telenovelas mexicanas, Amaya Mishalska quien fue abordada por algunas personas que no perdieron oportunidad para pedirle autógrafos y fotografías sin importarles el motivo de su asistencia.

Posterior al programa protocolario el gobernador Guillermo Padres acompañado por el Secretario de Semarnat Juan Jose Guerra Abud , el Comisionado de Areas Naturales Protegidas Luis Fuello McDonald, asi como el presidente municipal de Puerto Peñasco Gerardo Figueroa hicieron un recorrido por el Centro de Visitantes que estrena museografía interactiva , también ofrecieron una pequeña rueda de prensa con reporteros locales y posteriormente se entregó un cheque por 39 millones y medio de pesos para la ampliación del boulevard Juárez.

De igual forma que su llegada el mandatario estatal y el secretario federal subieron al helicóptero para retirarse de la explanada del Centro de Visitantes para acudir a una reunión privada dejando a los que regresaban a sus automóviles y camiones en una nube de polvo.
