pinacate-october-WM-620x203 Fun and good causes ~ Weekend Rundown 10/19 - 10/21Following last week’s music and sails, this weekend in Rocky Point is all about having fun and supporting good causes.  Plus, the Primera Toma and ITSPP Film Clubs are completing the Doctubre cycle of international documentaries that have been at ITSPP at 11 a.m. all week. Doctubre runs through Oct. 19th. Before we launch into the weekend, be sure to check out CEDO’s NaturArte Ecotours as on Thurs. night there is a nighttime Tide Pool adventure starting at 8 p.m. Remember that October is perfect month to visit the Pinacate BiosphereReserve and enjoy the amazing views!

Of course there is also great local music around town, including RoJo doing acoustic Spanish rock songs at Elixir on Thursday, the Sound Sets and Riband at The Lighthouse, and Agua de Coco at Caribbean bay. Looking at the OTL event, what exactly is the Santa Claus Club and what does St. Nick have to do with softball?  Maru, from EcoFun Rentals and Baja Hotel fills us in:

The SANTA CLAUS CLUB has been providing food, clothes, bycicles, toys, school supplies and household  items to the needy families of Puerto Penasco for the past 30 years. For the first 24 years we had a Christmas party in Cholla Bay on Christmas Day. In 2008, we changed our format to a year round program. We now provide our services door to door on a weekly basis. This gives us a better understanding of the needs of the families we are trying to help.

From 2008 to 2012, the Santa Claus Club passed out 3879 food bags with 155,160 pounds of food, 2057 bicycles, gave 21,657 children toys and gifts and passes out 37,675 pounds of clothes. In 2012, through September 15, we have passed out 630 food bags with 20,300 pounds of food, 324 bicycles, gave 4275 children toys and gifts and passed out 21,370 pounds of clothes. Besides our figures on which we keep totals, we have passed out thousands of pairs of shoes, blankets, towels and sheets. We have also made donations to the Casa Hogar, Bomberos of Rocky Point, Red Cross, Santa Fe Clinic, Santa Maria Clinic, Clinic San Jose, Sandy Beach Clinic and the Kiko Munro Foundations of disposable rubber gloves, bed liners, Depends, walkers, wheel chairs, canes, medical supplies and handicap items.

We are working year round collecting items for delivery into the Barrios. If you have anything to donate, it can be dropped of at the Baja Hotel/Eco Fun Rentals  in Puerto Penasco or at JJ’s Cantina in Cholla Bay. We have fundraisers several times a year: Chili Cook Offs at Playa Bonita and JJ’s  Cantina, Garage sales at Playa Bonita and JJ’s Cantina, Over the line SoftBall Tournament on Sandy Beach sponsored by Baja Cantina, One Club Golf Tournament  sponsored by JJ’s Cantina and an auction at JJ’s Cantina on Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend.
