Sandy Beach has become a natural sanctuary for sea turtle nesting, and the subsequent release of baby sea turtles into the Sea of Cortez.  Following a nearly 2-month incubation period, on Oct. 2nd, the first release for 2021 saw 73 baby turtles make their way to the sea in front of Sonoran Spa along Sandy Beach.

Luis Cesar Garcia, municipal director of the Federal Maritime Land Zone (ZOFEMAT) detailed releasing the baby sea turtles consists in removing the turtles from their temporary “carrier”, placing them on the sand, forming a human boundary, and keeping a careful eye on the trail of the turtles from the spot where the nest was found until they enter the sea.

“The journey of the small turtles toward the sea was a beautiful spectacle, monitored by staff from ZOFEMAT, PROFEPA (Federal Environmental Protection Agency), biologist Itzel Cárdenas – who is in charge of the incubation monitoring, along with support of members from the Tourism Auxiliary Unit, Municipal Ecology and Sustainable Development, biologists from the Intercultural Center for the Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO), and security staff of the Sonoran Spa resort,” detailed García.
