On Friday, May 4th, around 11 a.m., I arranged to meet with Nina Mier for an interview and to learn more about the film club Primera Toma (First Take), their recent film workshop, as well as about the documentary independent film fest “All Voices against the Silence” (showing this week 5/7 – 5/13).  It’s interesting to see that all these occurred as a curious cacophony of events and ideas.

Nina had already announced on Facebook she would be meeting up with Rocky Point 360, noting where she would be and when in case anyone was looking for her – plus she was selling tickets to the May 26th Premiere of Student Short Films at the Municipal Auditorium (Tickets now on sale).

From the office I could see her arrive and I ran to meet her. We greeted each other and she invited me to sit with her at the table. Though we had used the word “appointment” for our meeting, the conservation that ensued was far from formal.

Nina began to pull out posters and orange stickers, the latter of which she cut and began to place one by one “artistically” on the posters, making a correction to the announced date of this week’s film fest. She began with the presentation and we talked about our lives and personal interests, and little by little we began to embark upon the topic of film clubs as well as some films.

That is when we hit on Primera Toma, the film club Nina and her husband Socorro Gonzalez Barajas have been busy promoting, getting the word out about, and in supporting culture and the arts.

Primera Toma first began in Hermosillo, on Sept. 24, 1994 in room 107 of the Literary School of the University of Sonora, and the first film shown and discussed was “Fresa y Chocolate” (1994). Nina recalls the moment almost photographically; some time after, the University gave them the entire third floor, which remains the head office of the Primera Toma film club.

The club has not ceased since its beginning and has continued to grow. What began with 7 founders now includes 18 people, and 72 instructors who collaborate with them. They already have 2 film degree programs, 20 courses, and 10 workshops under their belt.

In 1999, Primera Toma became a Civil Association, providing them with more strength and presence. In Hermosillo they have hosted two short film fests, one in 2000 that commemorated Isela Vega who appeared as the guest of honor. In 2002, María Felix was invited to attend though sadly she passed away.

The Primera Toma film club has received more than 5000 donations and has participated in more than 200 collective and individual expos. Some years ago the club decided to bring their experience a few kilometers to the Northwestern part of the country.

Primera Toma came to Puerto Peñasco in 2003 and since that time have shown more than 200 films (regardless of attendance, rather it be one or three hundred). The films have generated discussions, some being somewhat ridiculous Nina confesses, but they have also been tremendously interesting and motivating, which makes one see that not all is lost.

From there was born the idea, from among the community of Puerto Peñasco, that conditions were right for the creation of the city’s First Film Workshop, which began in February of this year.

“You have no idea as to the quantity of artists of all types here in this municipality. It is impressive! I believe, honestly, it is one of the places within the state with the largest number of artists for its population,” Nina remarked as she continued her work of updating times on the promotional posters for the VII Hispano-Americano Documentary and Independent Film Fest “All Voices against the Silence.” Sadly, she noted there are few people who were interested in these types of cultural topics.

Yet then, as if coming out of a bad dream, she changed her tune and talked about Jimmi Maldonado, winner of a Short Film Contest recently held April 27th and 28th in Cd. Obregon, where he won with the short “Inside or Outside?”  Maldonado’s film will be featured as an invited short during the Students’ Short Premiere on May 26th* (Changed to Sunday, June 10th). Jimmi had just come by to say hi and talk for a minute. She also spoke about Germán Esquer Delgado, who holds a degree in music and Gregorian chant. These were examples of the talent alive in the city, and individuals I surely hope to speak with soon.

cinerally-620x299 Film in Rocky Point! Primera Toma Film Club + Nina MierContinuing the conversation about the First Film Workshop, from there came forth the plan for the “First Short Film Rally”, as a fun and comprehensive way to present workshop participants with a final exam. In groups, the participants had to make a 4 – 8 minute short, from beginning to end, based on the Pioneers and Founders of Puerto Peñasco. They began at 11 a.m. on a Saturday and wrapped up by noon the next day, on Sunday.

In the end, 14 of 16 teams turned in their films, which will be entered in the contest. The other two will be shown, though did not make it into the contest, “I’m sorry, rules are rules, whatever the circumstances may be that is out of our control.”

Thanks to all of this movement, the Primera Toma Film Club was contacted in order to be a host site for the VII Hispano-Americano Documentary and Independent Film Fest “All Voices against the Silence,” for which Nina is very grateful.  Though the fest was originally programmed for April, due to a few technical difficulties (shipping) this was moved to May 7th – 13th, hence the orange stickers and artisanal manner of changing the date on the posters.

Following the Short Film Rally (final project of the Film Workshop), the idea arose to do a Premiere in order to proudly showcase the recent student creations. This Premiere is set for May 26th and tickets are already on sale (Contact us and we’ll contact Nina). Following the showing, awards will be given out along with the presentation of recognitions and acknowledgement during the graduation of the first “film” class of Puerto Peñasco.

So, what’s next?  “To continue growing….an individual who has art in their veins cannot deny it. Once s/he is shown the tools, the creative process takes foot, and we will be there to guide them and support them as needed and as we can,” assures Nina.

When one is passionate about what they do, the first steps can be painstaking in moving forward, yet once in movement things simply happen. Everything has its moment and, as Nina says, “…there is no deadline for art, this simply flourishes when it needs to.”

With these first steps in movement, and recently greased up, there are other courses, workshops, as well as artistic and creative opportunities on the doorstep.

And all this arose from the birth of a film club just 18 years ago.

Cine club Primera Toma y Nina Mier

vii-muestra-325x620 Film in Rocky Point!

1era-toma-351x620 Film in Rocky Point!

contra-silencio Film in Rocky Point!
