On July 1st, elections were held in Mexico and millions of Mexicans went out to vote and act as Election Officials and clerks. In addition to the Presidential race, this year included elections for both state level and federal Representatives and Senators, as well as mayoral races here locally and across Sonora.
MORENA (Movimiento Regeneración Nacional) candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador won the federal election process, making it the first time in Mexican history an independent party has won the Presidential elections.
Preliminary voting results indicate Ernesto “Kiko” Munro has been reelected Mayor in Puerto Peñasco for the 2018 – 2021 term. This makes him one of the first mayors in the country to seek and actually achieve reelection, as well as marking a first for Puerto Peñasco after Sonora electoral laws were changed last year to allow for the reelection of mayors and state level representatives.
Preliminary results are reported through the PREP system of the National Electoral Institute (INE). Official calculations are then issued beginning July 4th for the 72 city administrations and 21 Districts across Sonora.
