EcoFun 1: Breaking the cold barrier

By MoKa Hammeken

ecofun-5121-630x420 EcoFun 1: Breaking the cold barrier While taking part in a recent creative writing workshop, Maru (of the local EcoFun adventure company) told me “Let’s go to [Bird] island tomorrow…I also invited Cristina (our writing instructor).” Apparently Maru had to check out how everything was going, as with the cold subsiding they will soon be busy with tours once more, plus she wanted photos of their SUPs (stand-up paddleboards) so people know this so “Hawaiian” way of gliding across the sea is now available.

We were to meet up at Reggie’s at 9 a.m. (perfect hour, since there are still burritos of all kinds) and from there Cristina, Carlo, Maru, and I headed to the launching point of EcoFun1.

ecofun-4933-620x413 EcoFun 1: Breaking the cold barrier The horizon looked misty, the sky blue and the sea calm. It was perfect just like that though there was one thing…we had to walk a bit in the sea in order to reach the small boat that would take us to the ship. Oh my goodness! The water was coooold!! (well, there are those who say I exaggerate). It was just cold enough to finish waking me up with a blast; more efficient than if I had drunk 3 or 4 espressos at once…But, oh well, with my shoes in hand and pants rolled up to my kneecaps, the cold barrier had to be broken in order to enjoy the rest of the day…out of one’s comfort zone as some say.

This cost my naked numb frozen feet approximately 20 minutes in the sun. Other than that, everything was full steam ahead. We sat on the upper deck in order to chat and enjoy the journey. The wind was still chilly, but the sun compensated for it. The crew also had plenty of blankets to hand out for anyone who wanted to wrap up. What a delicious sensation…enjoying the sea and sun, chilly and a friendly young woman, with a broad smile, passing by every now and then offering to fill our drinks.

Maru asked me, “You haven’t been before, right?” No. When Sami went last year I hadn’t yet arrived in Peñasco, and when Ariel went sometime in the Fall I was sick…that’s when we both grasped: Sami’s trip was exactly one year ago, on EcoFun’s first trip to Bird Island. Maru realized this could well be the anniversary trip, so we ordered drinks for a toast.

“In reality we (EcoFun) began in October of 2011,” she began to relate, “but at that point we only had bicycles, ATVs and trampolines. It was quite a thing because in order to be at Mayan they asked us to contract insurance that would include basically up to paper cuts” (a joke that seemed to tickle the fancy of Christina, writer and instructor of our Creative Writing Workshop III). “So, you know, a thousand phone calls, corporates, lawyers reaching agreements, the rest of us suffering, more calls and running around. Until finally they gave us a ‘green light’ but told us they wanted our services to include more things, preferably aquatic activities, with a boat, kayaks, and all that. So, we didn’t think twice, and headed to Puerto Vallarta for this boat – I by plane and others by car. So, they brought [the boat] up [to Puerto Peñasco]; it was a whole odyssey with huge waves, winds, and all. The point is it took them like three weeks to get here, and once it arrived we remodeled everything on the boat. It was precisely in February of last year we set out to sea on our first trip as EcoFun, also because it was around the time of whale sightings plus the weather was not as cold.  Some time later, curiously, after they (Mayan Palace) had given us such a hard time for so long, they called me and asked if we wanted the concession for all the Mayans…although I was fascinated I said, “hold on!”… if they asked for so much for this, what will they ask for now?  But no…we had gotten over that hump and things have been much easier and it has gone better for us.”

ecofun-5343-413x620 EcoFun 1: Breaking the cold barrier “Maru, why were you drawn to this type of business?” asked Cristina.

“Well, I have always been a “coastal girl” at heart. I love the sea, I love adventure, and I love that my son loves all this. This is a good way to work. I’m not made out to be closed up in an office. Although I can’t lie, there’s a lot of administrative work involved, but everything is part of the work I have to do to ensure my business stays on track, and people that go out with us are happy and those that work with me are content. Look around you! It’s a job with an amazing view that allows me to get away,” she laughs.

A sort of barking could be heard in the distance, and as we neared the rocky formation the barks multiplied in different tones and intensities… it was like a boisterous waterpark of sea lions on vacation. We were told we were about to arrive, and to go to the lower deck in order to begin organizing kayak outings…. Maru climbed into one and was soon lost in the distance, along with another three vessels.

The sea lions would come by, look at us, follow us, jump along and pursue the kayaks. The territorial machos get angry if you get too close, while the little ones are happily curious, despite the unbridled shouts of their mothers.  It is amazing to be able to pass just meters from these living beings, coexist with them in the water, learning respect “you over there and I here, and so we’re happy.”

Maru then showed up with Carlo in a kayak and tells me, “ok, now time for photos on the SUP (stand-up paddleboard)”. She grabbed the board and hopped up, paddling toward the sea lions as I got into a smaller boat in order to take pictures. Obviously, I was not going to get in a kayak as I do not possess such mastery.

After a while, Maru returned to the EcoFun ship (as although it seems simple, SUP requires skill and someday when I’m not afraid of falling in the water – and when I wear a swimsuit – I’ll try it out), and the smaller boat kept going along for a photographic tour…. pups, adults, mothers milking their young, pelicans, seagulls, and birds of all kinds.

There was just one vision that broke my heart, a sea lion with a fishing net wrapped around its neck…and there was nothing we could do. “They’re curious if they get close to us and we don’t make any sudden movements, but they’re very aggressive if we get close to them. Perhaps the most prudent thing would be to advise those who can help them, and see if they can do something,” my boat guide told me, with a sad grimace, while trying to distract another gentleman in the boat with younger, happier companions.

On the way back to the large boat, we passed next to a beach with “single” available macho adults, all of whom posed flirtingly for the camera. Completely unconcerned, there were some who swam by with a fin in the air, others seemed to be sun bathing…I imagined it was like a male beach club, and somewhere within there were surely those obsessed with exercise, lifting weights.

Back on board EcoFun 1, people retook their positions, some with blankets; drinks were refilled and we took up our trivial conversations about books, movies, book translations and movie dubbing, our youth, and the unfortunate lack of whale and dolphin sightings on this voyage.

Suddenly, everyone began to exclaim as the dolphins had indeed made their appearance, jumping and swimming alongside the boat.

Entonces Maru me preguntó “¿Tú no habías venido, verdad?”

¡Mira a tu alrededor!
