Dining presented by UTPP!

The surprise invitation came over email. “You are invited to evaluate the performance of students from the gastronomy degree program from the UTPP (Technological University of Puerto Peñasco).” I jumped at the chance to see what may lie in store for the culinary world of Rocky Point. The students, who were completing their 4th semester of the program, had taken over the kitchen and dining room of Emiliano’s at the Sonoran Sun resort for this, their final evaluation. Head of Community Relations at the UTPP, Francisco Ureña Duarte, explained over the course of two days two teams of students were having their work evaluated by a handful of invited guests.

100_4918-620x384 Dining presented by UTPP!I was part of the group invited for the 2nd day, and though I believe I came in through the wrong door (straight to the bar, wouldn’t you know) upon arrival was graciously led to my table by the UTPP hostess Marisol. She handed me a simple though elegantly designed menu offering a three-course meal (good thing I hadn’t eaten previously), with two selections provided for each course.  I was soon joined by fellow journalist Myreya Morena Corona of Aló magazine, while others took their spots at two tables nearby.  Samuel, our UTPP waiter (who also informed us he baked the tasty bread), took our drink orders and then brought out the first selections including a chef salad for Myreya, and for me a capresse salad. Jerry Cañez, an instructor at UTPP who also has his own local catering business,  stopped by to ensure things were going well and then launched into a detailed explanation of the pesto-type accompaniment to the capresse tower.

We were soon joined by Marcela Irineo, of the local Ford agency, which was further beneficial as she ordered different main courses and desserts than either Myreya or myself – allowing for more pictures of the meal!  The main course options included shrimp scampi and pasta or beef fillet doused in a red wine sauce, over mashed potatoes and spinach. Dessert (as if we had any more room) included either a sorbet-type peach mousse, or cheesecake with seasonal fruits.  A glass of red wine and coffee rounded out my meal, though the sangria also looked tempting. Team leader and head chef for the day, Sarahi, came by the table to make sure we had had an enjoyable meal.

The time came to evaluate the entire dining experience, from the hostess to service and of course the food itself. I can happily say that with the growing gastronomy program at UTPP I look forward to what the dining future may hold for Rocky Point!  As another indication of this program’s success, it appears to be the most popular area of study at UTPP which also offers a strong program for paramedics, business, and has recently added studies in the area of Information Technology and Communications.   Classes for the upcoming UTPP semester begin on Sept. 3rd.

Provecho!

Gracias muchachos!!
