Public Projects Director Heberto Reyna explains there was a four month delay in getting this work started, though the goal is to complete this stretch by March 31st (just before Semana Santa). He and the local administration ask for the community and tourists to be patient and tolerant with inconveniences that may arise along the dirt detours leading to the Old Port and Malecón.  *Detour route indicated above as yellow line with some transit along the orange line as work advances*

Reyna stated detour signs are lit at night in order to prevent accidents. He also assures his office will remain alert to keeping dirt streets along the detours watered in an effort to keep down dust .

In addressing the sectors most affected from this work – which in this case includes business owners in the Old Port, restaurants, and fishermen – staff from the local administration are now meeting with different members of productive sectors to explain the situation and reach agreements to keep negative economic effects as low as possible.

The project to modernize the dock area near the entrance to the Old Port includes paving with the use of hydraulic concrete, sidewalks, curbs, handicap ramps, as well as renovated sewage and water lines, through an investment of nearly 60 million pesos.

Along with this project, work continues on connecting water, cable, electric, and sewage lines along Blvd. Benito Juarez at the stretch from near Sam’s up to the stoplight on the way to Sonoyta. This work has also occasioned a number of detours along neighboring dirt streets.

The local Chamber of Commerce (CANACO) invites business sectors impacted by this current work to attend a meeting on Thursday, Feb. 12 @ 9 a.m. at the CANACO offices located on the east side of Shrimp Park (down the street from Bomberos).
