Demonstration in Sonoyta to block transit into Sonora from U.S.

At 5 p.m. on Friday, July 3rd, several members from the community of Sonoyta (Municipality of Plutarco Elias Calles across from the US border at Lukeville, AZ) came together for a peaceful demonstration near the border entry, blocking traffic with their cars and causing people to return North. They were in place on Friday for about two hours. In response, US customs and border officials halted southbound traffic temporarily at the Lukeville border crossing to prevent further back-up of cars.

An ongoing community roadblock in Sonoyta is expected on July 4th from 6 am – 8 pm (or rather, to coincide with the adjusted border entry hours).

We encourage you to enjoy your holiday weekend safely and continue to plan for future trips to Puerto Peñasco – and will continue to update info as available.

Please know that our mayor, local Chamber of Commerce, Convention & Visitors Bureau, and all of the many businesses and people in dire need of economic relief during this complicated time made a tremendous effort to welcome residents and visitors alike this weekend.

For those of you who made it to Puerto Peñasco earlier this week, welcome, #maskupRP and hope you love this town as much as we do. Please respect all health guidelines the city has in place. If you were on your way, we look forward to your next visit as we make our way through these complicated times.

Thank you.
