City to celebrate Day of the Dead with Altars and Catrinas

In conserving Mexican traditions while promoting community participation in both recreational and cultural activities, the City of Puerto Peñasco invites everyone to a traditional Day of the Dead celebration.

Nina Mier, Director of Culture, details the event will take place on days leading up to Mexico’s traditional Day of the Dead, with a series of activities planned for Oct. 30th & 31st along the artisan street Calle 32 – also frequently called “Rodeo Drive.” Artistic programs over the two evenings (which begin each day around 5 p.m.) will be presented by students from the local Casa de la Cultura and the Fine Arts Initiation school (INBA), along with local artists who also provide a dab of color and beauty to any event.

Mier added the City has also launched a contest for both Day of the Dead Altars and Catrina costumes.

Over the two days, judges will visit each of the Day of the Dead Altars located along the Artisans’ Market of “Rodeo Drive” (also known as the old road to La Cholla). Organizers have coordinated with COBACH High-school Director Isela Gamboa Hernández, in order to also attend COBACH’s altar contest the same day. They have invited the school to present the winning Day of the Dead Altar at the City celebration.

The public in general is invited to view the altars each evening beginning at 5 p.m., and join in the celebrations marking this very traditional event in Mexico.
