As a preventive measure given the current coronavirus (Covid-19) impacting the globe, the city administration of Puerto Peñasco will suspend large public government events of a civil, social, and cultural nature. In addition, activities in local sports leagues were cancelled as of this past weekend, as well as all activities at area community centers.
Mayor Ernesto “Kiko” Munro detailed this measure would be in effect from March 17th – 29th, with the goal of limiting activities or events with large crowds both indoors and out over the next two weeks. He clarified that government, administrative, and community services would proceed as normal at City Hall and other citywide offices. His administration has also requested the Secretary of Education extend the school closure period from March 17th (rather than the 20th), and has asked members of INAPAM (National Institute for Older Adults) to stop having their regular meetings as older adults are in one of the higher-risk categories.
The mayor further explained the city would continue to distribute flyers from the municipal campaign “Avoid CoronaVirus, Follow the right path”, which details four cardinal points in helping to prevent the disease.
The mayor emphasized the city is working in close coordination with federal and state health authorities as to what further steps to take to prevent Covid-19.
