Carlos Sánchez boosts Creative Writing in Puerto Peñasco

During the last week of August, the Hermosillo born writer Carlos Sanchez led a Creative Writing workshop in Puerto Peñasco, dousing the nearly 30 eager participants in waves of the creative process. The workshop, sponsored in part by the City and the First Take Film Club (Primera Toma Cine Club), was originally scheduled for 3 hours an evening throughout the week – though this was extended to some nights for up to 5 hours! Following the workshop, Carlos led a book presentation of his most recent work Matar (To Kill), which is a haunting yet spellbinding compilation of stories and notes from interviews with killers (currently only available in Spanish).

MoKa Hammeken, of RockyPoint360.com and fellow participant in the Creative Writing workshop, had the opportunity to sit down with Carlos for an interview – which is captured here below. (Translation: Shandra Keesecker-Rivero)

About Carlos Sánchez

Escritor-Carlos-Sanchez-413x620 Carlos Sánchez boosts Creative Writing in Puerto PeñascoI didn’t know much about Carlos Sánchez, instructor of the recent Creative Writing workshop (which took place Aug. 27 – 31), solely what had been posted on Facebook, his face – thanks to the poster that was going around -, and a brief description of his style.

He seemed distant and hermetic, serious and strict…as posters can portray. Nevertheless, I had the opportunity to get to know him and with pleasure I can say he is very different.

During the workshop, I realized he is a very sensitive and reflective person, who has opened up a path with a machete of good karma. He needs tremendous will following a glimpse of what he has lived, a somewhat difficult life that has marked his road and his writing.

During the workshop (which we hope we will see again), he influenced the hearts of many who to date continue very active on Facebook; poetically, questioningly, skeptical, believing and animated in sharing their thoughts.

Yet, who is Carlos? In addition to being a renowned Sonoran writer who came to Peñasco to promote writing upon the invitation of Nina Mier and Socorro González (of the First Take Film Club), how did his journey begin?

By the time we sat down, with his good-natured and down-to-earth self, he had already lavished in good friendships and the day of the interview he was at our classmate Wendy’s home. We had decided to meet there. Wendy’s husband graciously welcomed me; Wendy invited me in for a cup of coffee and let us be… A beautiful family that did all they could to not make noise throughout the interview (I couldn’t hear a peep on my recording). Honestly, I was a little embarrassed. I thought after meeting there we would go somewhere else.

After a short talk with everyone, suddenly the people disappeared and the interview followed its course.

He was born in the Hermosillo “seventies” (1970), Carlos’ first brush with literature was through the radio:

I believe the first contact I had, and I believe we all have, with literature is through songs. As a child, I was fortunate to not be surrounded by so many forms of communication and there was not all this proliferation of information. I remember I had an uncle who was blind, Josesito, and he listened to radio dramas such as, for example, “Profirio Cadena’s The Glass Eye” and chapters of “Kalimán.”  It was the same that was in print, but on the radio. The image of my uncle Josesito is very present, leaning against a dark wall in my grandmother’s home. I was between three or four years old, and I have the memory of those moments etched in my mind. I have memories from when I was very young and I remember I became his blind man’s cane and would take him to the restroom, which was a latrine at the back of the corral at grandmother’s home. I remember one day he had diarrhea and I got fed up… “Let’s go again…” he would say, and I, “Hold on, Uncle” because I didn’t want to take him anymore.

On the other hand, I had a father who was “quite a minstrel” (granted I didn’t understand him as such, I didn’t hear the term until later when I came into contact with theater and the arts). My father was a professional story teller; the way he would gesticulate, how he would construct as he was telling you. He would tell stories about his life, with a vagrancy that his cultural and experiential background would allow. My father told me once that he belonged to the mafia and told me how they would strategize in trafficking drugs and such, and obviously that he had a lot of money during his youth. When I am with him as a young man, he is now in extreme poverty, with barely enough to eat. Following an accident he had. I conceptualize all that now, as my true encounter with literature.

I also had an uncle who was a professional baseball player, and on one occasion he read a novel, entitled Papillón;  he did a good retelling and would say what had stayed with him. I was enchanted. I remember I would imagine the tremendously tall waves into which the prisoner Papillón would through objects to see how far he could throw them, and calculate the potential in order to figure out how to throw himself and his things, and how he would stow away his money so they wouldn’t take it from him… many things, images that stayed with me.

Then there were the corridos by Tigres del Norte, [and] Camelia la Texana since they tell stories. I didn’t go to school (university or high school, only elementary and secondary school), I am self-taught, but I always wanted to express myself. When I was young I would always write songs or verses for me, or give them to a girl.

I am a car builder. I know how to paint cars, do inserts, do auto body work; my family, the Sanchez’s, is one of auto body workers. One day a childhood friend of mine, Aquila, introduced me to her boyfriend, a lawyer who writes, and at that time he wrote for a paper and that is when it occurred to me to tell him, “hey, I’m interested in writing.” Truthfully, I don’t know why I said that, but he said, “Alright, cool” and I threw myself into it, and this is how the birth took place into literature and writing. I began to write and I suffered a lot (I continue to suffer) but with no foundation, no basis; I threw myself in and literally began to cry, faced with the impossibility of constructing and the power to say what I wanted. He began to guide me and point out some things, and I went for it and I began to get published and get into newspapers. I really like what’s on the margin, and I concentrate on that.

I’m talking about 1993, and spaces were beginning to open up. I entered a seminar where we [writers] form ourselves and I began doing a story, without knowing about the elements that make up the story genre, but I began to do so naturally. I saw an editor (93, 94), and I had to cover the crime against Colosio. I was [sic.] just beginning and he read at the seminar, called Acá, a story I wrote about a boy who went crazy, which I called “El Chuki stayed up” due to drug consumption. He liked how I wrote and tells me “well, let’s see…write about this.” So, he trusted in me and I believed it and began to write story after story after story.

In 94 I began a degree in dramatic arts at UNISON, we began to act. I got up on a stage and began to read and it gripped me. That opened a world to me. That is where I say I began to read, at 23. As a young boy, yes I grabbed one or another novel, but nothing seriously. I have always been from the street, “free.” That is when I started to grab books, go to libraries to hang out with people that already had a literary background, I began to meet editors and… I suffered a lot! I began to write failed texts, but then suddenly a text was successful. That is how I continued suffering, with grammar (without really knowing what it was), many times. I still don’t understand it that well, but I know that it is something that governs esthetics. I would always write by hand and although yes it had a lot of errors, I honestly didn’t cease.

Years passed and at some point I began to get published in national papers, one day I realized I had a good compendium of stories that could be a book. I published it, a book of urban stories and that book led to another and then another and another, until now…as I present my book Matar.

Now I am more fully aware of what I want to do, the ability to manage genres or themes and that line of interest also led me to give workshops. Learning to read and write, one has sufficient tools to get around in this world.

His way of telling his life story was literature in itself, and I didn’t want to adjust anything. I imagined myself listening to his life story on the radio (not very different from listening to an interview through earphones). I hear his low, paused voice now without wanting to, as I reread this document.

I bought two of his books during his presentation: Matar (To Kill) and Aves de paso (Birds of passage). Perhaps it’s that well defined Sonoran accented voice that accompanies me now while I read.

Our interview did not come to an end, yet those are themes we’ll address on another occasion.
