Can I bring a turkey into Mexico?

With Thanksgiving week upon us, it has been customary for many to stow a turkey or two into the car for travels to Mexico (and I’m not necessarily talking about family members).

However, it is important to note in recent years the “turkey regulations” have changed quite a bit and currently, according to SENASICA (which is the department where this falls), only smoked turkey is allowed and at that only in completely intact packaging, labeled in Spanish, English, or another understandable language – with the accompanying health authority stamp.

The SENASICA guidelines (found here in English: List of AgriFood Products and By-Products for Tourist Importation) (updated link Nov 2019) indicate (only for smoked chicken or turkey):  Up to 6kg or 1 – 3 packets per family, provided this does not surpass the allowed weight
