“Beautify your Street” project recognizes winning muralists

On Saturday, September 24th, prizes were awarded to the winning mural artists of the “Beautify your Street” project, bringing a wealth of color to the curios “Rodeo Road” area on the way to La Cholla.

Organizers Ellie Balderama along with Eddie Wharez and Erick Plata noted the contest, goal of which was to provide more color and life to the curios area along Calle 32 on the way to La Cholla, well surpassed expectations. Following the initial contest period, online voting was opened on Facebook where, after obtaining more than 2400 likes each, first place ended in a tie with prizes going to Izrael Ríos with his mural “Men of Sand” and Gabby Gómez with her creation “Indigent”. Each artist was award 7000 pesos for first place.

The second place prize of 5000 pesos was awarded to Héctor Arvizu for his mural “Lion Fish” and who had traveled from Magdalena, Sonora to participate in the mural contest.

Artist Gloria Núñez was awarded the 4000 peso third place prize for her mural “Frida and the Alebrije”.

The contest, in which various local sponsors participated to help promote the idea, attracted dozens of tourists and residents who visited the area while the murals were going up.  The murals are now part of the ongoing attractions that visitors to the curios area can enjoy, as it now has its own “Calle Bonita”.
