Beach. Baseball. Bocce. Bandas. Weekend Rundown 4/5-4/8

The long awaited Semana Santa is here and Rocky Point is nearly bursting at the seams. Pretty much every hotel and rental agency in town is completely booked for this weekend, or as some tell us they’re at “120%.” It is an exciting time indeed! Much of the activity over this busy Semana Santa weekend is centered around the Old Port, with traditional bandas filling the evening air with popular tunes all night long and crowds filling up any available spot along the malecón.  Police operatives in effect for the busy weekend note during the evenings they will halt car traffic into the Old Port, except for residents, some businesses, and hotel guests who we hear will be given temporary passes.

Plus, here are some other highlights going on around town this weekend:

100_3669-620x582 Beach. Baseball. Bocce. Bandas. Weekend Rundown 4/5-4/8Baseball – Puerto Peñasco’s professional baseball team from the Liga del Norte (Northern League) the Tiburones recently started their season and have home games scheduled for this weekend against Mexicali (tonight 4/5) and then against Tecate (Fri – Sun). Games start around 7ish at the big blue stadium located next to Plaza la Madre as you come into town.

Bocce – The Las Conchas Community Relations Committee will be holding their annual Beach Bocce tournament fundraiser right on the beach in Las Conchas between sections 1 and 12, sign up around 11 a.m. and bocce madness begins around noon.

Beach – Speaking of activities on the beach, in addition to popular beach spots along Playa Hermosa, Playa Bonita, Sandy Beach, and out over by Cholla Bay, there’s a new public beach in town – Mi Playa – entrance is right off Blvd. Fremont (near Interceramic). Check out our news note to see the big plans in store for Mi Playa.

Fiesta/música/Fun:  Spots all over town are planning super fiestas for Semana Santa from Bumaye (on Ave. Sinaloa) to a Free concert with Alan Munro on Friday in the parking area next to The Links Golf Course of Las Plomas, or even a Saturday Sunset DJ party @ Wrecked at the Reef, and everything in between!

passion-vias-150x150 Beach. Baseball. Bocce. Bandas. Weekend Rundown 4/5-4/8Some other highlights for the weekend include Via Crucis Viviente on Good Friday (reenactment of stations of the cross) starting from Plaza in the Old Port around noon, sunrise Easter service in front of Puerta Privada 7 a.m. – bring a chair – plus services all over town.  For Eco tours, CEDO is planning a tidepool walk on Saturday, plus their weekly Nature talks. Weather is great for  trip out to the Pinacate Biosphere Reserve and the Schuk Toak Visitors’ Center!  There’s also Bratwurst and German music just off Blvd. Fremont on Saturday from 3 – 7 p.m., Saturday Sand Drags @ Thunder on the Beach (gates tend to open late morning with races starting about mid-afternoon), a new gallery stop in the Old Port by the Blue Marlin, a handful of new restaurants around town including Greek dishes, BBQ, Tacos, and more!

Roads:  Entrance to Old Port is open and beautiful! Remember, one way in (right-hand side by boat area), and one way out (left-side Av. Alcantar). Watch for evening closures into Old Port for Semana Santa activities. Paving work going on along the road toward Playa Bonita and Sandy Beach area when heading out off Calle 13; road is paved down to El Establo horse rides and work continues on the stretch off toward Playa Bonita. Blvd. Fremont work is moving along steadily with various stages of laying asphalt going on all this past week.  As always, be safe out there on the roads, beaches, waves, desert, etc.  By the way, check out the newly remodeled & painted pedestrian bridge near Banca Serfin – City plans are to keep banners off this to help with driving safety.
