American Legion Post MX 15 finds new home in Mirador

SAM_0385-620x465 American Legion Post MX 15 finds new home in MiradorThe American Legion Post MX 15 has moved into its new home in the Mirador, settling into the bottom part of the former Los Juanes restaurant. Rob Baylor, who is co-manager along with Ardi Harris, gave us a quick tour through the welcoming dining area, bar, office, and kitchen and said American Legion members are thrilled with the new space! They moved into the new spot around early December, just in time for a hearty Christmas party and feast, and are pleased to announce they continue to offer daily lunch specials (for American Legion members and guests alike) at around 30 to 60 pesos, plus special dinners on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 – 6 p.m. for generally only 60 pesos.

As Baylor reports in the December 2011 issue of the Rocky Point Times, the American Legion MX 15 is one of 18 organizations in Mexico and is made up of former US veterans and associates.  You don’t have to be a veteran to visit the club as everyone who comes in is welcome and treated well, this includes the recent Red Hat Ladies Luncheon that held their monthly get together there on Dec. 26. You can also become an associate member for $30 US.

The American Legion MX 15 post maintains a community program by delivering food packages to about 18 families each week, principally to elderly individuals who are unable to make it to other food programs around town. In the donation food pantry there were bags of beans, rice, cans of tuna, and other non-perishable food items that people have generously donated and Rob tells us they welcome food donations brought in to help them with their weekly bundles.  Just now at Christmas they also had one of their members dress up as Santa as they took toys and goodies out into local neighborhoods.

Coming in January, the American Legion will be holding a Chowder Cook-Off so mark your calendars for Thursday, Jan. 26, and grab a spoon!  All types of chowders are welcome!  There is no entry fee, though all entries must be at the American Legion post at 1 p.m. on Jan. 26th, judging will be from 4 – 6 p.m.

The American Legion MX 15 post is non-smoking (indoors – though the Los Juanes owners surprised them with the gift of a beautiful tiled table “for the smokers” on the front porch), plus there is wi-fi service and availability for calls to the US. Check with Rob or Ardi about the great dinners scheduled on Mondays and Wednesdays, plus card games and domino nights!  The American Legion MX 15 post is open daily from 11 a.m. until 7 or 8ish (depending on when the last folks leave), and is located on Ave. Chihuahua just off Calle 1 in the Mirador.  You can find them on Facebook as American Legion Post MX 15 or contact them at: 602-539-0381
