7th Altar and Catrina contest resumes Day of the Dead traditions

In furthering the revival of Mexican traditions across Puerto Peñasco, the 2021 Festival of Altares de Muertos and Catrinas successfully returned to adorn Calle 32 “Rodeo Drive” on days leading up to the traditional Day of the Dead.

In this 7th traditional Mexican festival of the dearly departed, promoted by the Municipal Institute of Culture and Art (IMCA), residents and tourists alike enjoyed the colorful attire of Catrina participants, and the moving inspiration surrounding the 24 altars along the route.

The two-day event, held on the evenings of Oct. 30th and 31st, also included an artistic program featuring projection of “The Bat” by the Schuk Toak Visitors Center, theater, folkloric dance, along with modern and regional dances, a string ensemble, children’s folklore, Polynesian dance, and a Sunday procession of Catrinas led by the Afirka Dusté group.
