Day 1: On Saturday, July 7th, at 6 a.m., participants set out on the first of two days at the 5th Annual Deep Sea Fishing Tournament organized by the Puerto Peñasco Convention and Visitors Bureau (OCV). This year there are more than $10,000 USD in prizes to be given away within the 3 categories: Grouper, Pinto Bass, and Leopard Grouper. What’s new is that the tournament is part of the 2012 Sea of Cortés Circuit, which is promoting recreational fishing throughout the Sea of Cortés and includes support from the four states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, and Sonora. The grand prize for the Sea of Cortés Circuit will be presented during its final phase of the year in Los Cabos, with prizes totaling $400,000 USD!
With the port serving as background, the official launch of the 5th Annual Deep Sea Fishing Tournament in Puerto Peñasco took place at 6 a.m. on Saturday morning. Participants had until 6 p.m. that day to bring in their catch. Early on, those aboard “Tiburon” including local businessman/restauranteur Dave Roberts and friends came in for a first stop after having already caught 8 massive Groupers – the heaviest of these coming in at 73.1 lbs. Hours later, without any reports trickling in and with anticipation growing, concern began to spread among those of us waiting as at 5:30 p.m. no boats could be seen on their way in. But then, at 5:45 p.m. there was excitement at seeing various boats quickly making their way back to the port. In those 15 minutes, the boats “Caballo del Mar,” “Katrina,” “Tiburon,” and “Just Hammered” tied up at the docks to unload and weigh their catch of the day, all in search of reeling in top spots.
The excitement continues today, Sunday, when all boats must be back by 4 p.m. for the final weigh-in and to define who the winners will be in each of the 3 categories. Copa Puerto Peñasco 2012 – Primer Día
El dia de ayer a las 6 de la manana, se dio la salida a los participantes del torneo de pesca Organizado por la OCV, este año ofrece mas de 10 mil dolares en premios a repartirse en las 3 categorias, Baya, Pinta & Sardinera. Por primera ocasion, este torneo forma parte del “Circuito Mar de Cortes” , que promueve la pesca deportiva en el Mar de Cortés, con diferentes torneos a lo largo de 4 estados (baja california norte, sur, Sinaloa y Sonora) y el cual tendra como Gran premio en su ultima edicion del Año en Los cabos, una bolsa de $400 mil dolares.
Teniendo como escenario el puerto, se les dio la salida oficial a las embarcaciones a las 6 de la manana el sabado teniendo como hora limite para regresar las 6:00 pm de la tarde. de forma anticipada, regreso la embarcacion “Tiburon” donde Dave Roberts y sus Amigos, habian logrado capturar 8 bayas de muy buen tamaño, y colocando la mayor de estas en primer lugar momentaneamente con 73.1 libras de peso. las horas siguientes, no se tuvo ningun reporte, y una sensacion de preocupacion empezo a sentirse entre los que estabamos esperando la llegada de los barcos, ya que siendo las 5:30 todavia no se vei a a lo lejos ningun yate regresar. fue a las 5:45 cuando la emocion de mirar varias embarcaciones a lo lejos regresando al puerto de forma apresurada, para llegar a tiempo, y es en estos 15 minutos que se las embarcaciones, “caballo del Mar”, “Katrina”, “Tiburon” y “Just hammered” se amarraron al muelle para descargar su pesca del dia y pesarlos, en busca de quedar en los primeros lugares.
La emocion continuara este domingo, cuando a las 4 de la tarde se cierre el pesaje y se definan los ganadores de las categorias, en un pequeño convivio en la terraza del restaurant “terramar” desde las 3:00 de la tarde.
