3rd Charanga Soap-Box Derby just weeks away

By José Antonio Pérez

The third Rocky Point Charanga Soap-Box Derby, a fundraiser for the José Dávalos Valdivia home for the elderly (Casa Hogar), will take place April 14th.  Casa Hogar Board President Santiago Ruiz Hurtado highlighted the family-friendly event will once again race down the hill at the Mirador, noting its popularity grew 200% from just the first year to the second.

Ruiz detailed the event encourages teams of 6 to build an engine free (though preferably with brakes) vehicle, which they’ll race down the Mirador hill, over a ramp, and towards the finish line.  Last year 30 cars participated in the event, which was over double the number of racers in the derby’s first appearance in 2016.

For more information on registering a charanga for this year’s derby, contact Santiago at 638 384 6166. Race entry fee 600 pesos, no charge for spectators!
