2012 “Chef de Acero” Competition / Taste of Peñasco

(Inglés/Español)

In helping to showcase the variety of dining options available in Puerto Peñasco, a number of terrific restaurants presented samples of their dishes during the 2012 Taste of Peñasco with 6 additional teams of talented chefs participating in the challenging yet “amistoso” (friendly-match) Iron Chef Competition, all in the name of helping to raise funds for two very deserving groups – the Puerto Peñasco Fire Department and the local meals organization “2 Fish Ministries.” The “Chef de Acero” teams (literally translated as Chefs of Steel) consisted of: Ramón Ramos Rodriguez (chef) and Eliezer Lozano Ibarra (sous chef) from La Cocina de Ramón, Mickey Medina (chef) and Gabriela Mata (sous chef and UTPP student) from Chef Mickey’s Place, Julio Cauich Balam (chef) and Geronimo Lopez Dominguez (sous chef) from the Bakal Restaurant at Mayan Palace), José Quiroz (chef) and Luis Alfredo Corrales (sous chef) who both work at Capone’s, Chef Juan Caballero Guzmán and sous chef Ricardo Murrieta from Mare Blu Ristorante,  and Marco Martinez (chef) and Jeovanny Osuna (sous chef) from Coyote Grill. In the words of Puerto Peñasco Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro, “I want to tell you you are all winners, and congratulate you for the work you put into this…”!!!

The Event / El Evento

taste-of-penasco-10-620x413 2012 "Chef de Acero" Competition / Taste of PeñascoSix chefs and their sous chefs gathered at Plaza del Camarón in Rocky Point on Saturday, Feb. 11th, each ready to take on the secret ingredient of the day to highlight their creativity and culinary skills. The secret ingredient: dates.  The dishes of six chefs met five judges, who were tucked away in the “kiosko” at the Plaza in order to dine and judge in peace. Judges were given a scoring sheet on which they rated each plate for presentation, taste, and creativity in the use of the secret ingredient (1-5 points, with 5 being the highest in each category). Five chefs came close, but only one could be named Puerto Peñasco Iron Chef 2012; in a repeat of his 2009 win, Chef Mickey Medina (accompanied by sous chef and culinary arts student Gabriela Mata) once again came out on top and will house the coveted Iron Chef plaque at Chef Mickey’s Place on Blvd. Fremont (in Plaza del Sol) this year.  The award, along with a banner donated by Rocky Point resident Dr. Doug Allen, were presented to the 2012 Iron Chef by Mayor Alejandro Zepeda Munro accompanied by his wife Marcela Albelaiz de Zepeda, State Secretary of Civil Protection Rubén Rodrigo Gracia Rosas as well as Rubén Salido Martinez, Fire Chief and local Director of Civil Protection, Gilberto Castillo from the Office of Cultural Affairs, and Rosie Glover, one of the principal Taste of Peñasco organizers. It is also important to note that Dr. Doug Allen presented the local Fire Department with a $700 USD donation.  Regardless of the outcome, the excitement and inspiration surrounding Rocky Point’s own “chef stadium” set up on the side of Plaza del Camarón was palpable as small groups of people broke into applause as each dish was completed. In just over an hour, each chef twosome prepared an appetizer, entrée, and dessert for the judges to enjoy, sending each dish out as soon as they were adorned and finished.
