In his tenth year of trekking from just outside Phoenix to Puerto Penasco, and across approximately 200 miles, Steve Schwab of SeaSide Reservations successfully completed his 2012 fundraising walk for the Peñasco Children’s Foundation on Monday, March 12. We caught up with Steve about mid-morning around KM 75 on the Peñasco-Sonoyta highway as he was preparing for the “final sprint” to the finish line at the turn-off to Caborca/Coastal Highway. He shared that along this year’s journey, which took about 12 days, he was joined by his son Conner for a while and also helped by friends with a place to stay along the route, and others who provided water and other types of support. As a fundraiser, he explained, though he did not yet have final numbers he believed this walk had raised more money than in years past and hopes to possibly add different “legs” for next year’s walk in order to get more people involved.
As he neared the Finish line, Steve was greeted by friends and staff, as well as Ana Paula and her family. Ana Paula had received support from the Penasco Children’s Foundation for a brain tumor operation and enthusiastically greeted Steve with flowers.
Peñasco Children’s Foundation is a non-profit organization here in Puerto Peñasco that is dedicated to enriching the lives of children in the city by offering assistance in four specific ways:
• provide medical assistance to local families who cannot afford to pay for their children’s healthcare needs
• assist families whose children are in economic duress
• offer educational assistance to children
• assist in the general enrichment of children’s lives
