Yoga-izing Peñasco

MG_3900-413x620 Yoga-izing PeñascoI remember some time ago a doctor recommended I do yoga, or pilates. In the absence of both, I would go walk on the beach, which is good exercise and relaxing. Nevertheless, It was not completely what the doctor ordered, and I still had the urge to try the other.

Fads are like waves; body combat arrived and then left, pilates came with strange beds, and also went away…the only thing left standing are the gyms and one or another spinning class (and now everyone is going around on bikes, but I’ll write more about that later). Still, among women (more than anything) whenever there was talk about doing exercise the comment would arise, “I wish there were yoga…do you know where they have that? That would be great!”

Then, suddenly, I heard rumors of someone giving yoga classes sporadically on the beach at about 6 a.m. I was invited on two or three occasions, however at that unearthly hour I can only think about sleeping a little more, so I obviously never got to meet this mysterious being. Later, I heard about an American woman who, whenever she would come to town, also held classes on the beach by her condo – which was even more mysterious than the first.

The rising water of waves from the yoga tide has begun to hit this Port. I, truthfully, in looking around, am thrilled that yoga is an alternative here in Puerto Peñasco. This issue was becoming serious when I saw an announcement about the opening of Peñasco Fitness Center, an addition to Kit Anderson’s Peñasco Beauty Center. On September 29th, as part of their “Open House” they were offering a free yoga class at 9 that morning. That time seemed reasonable to me for a Saturday; I loved the idea and even invited a friend along so we could go together.

MG_3896-620x413 Yoga-izing PeñascoWe arrived at the spot, which is next to Ley just off Calle Constitucion (around the corner). Those already there made room for us and we began the class with Mariana Zatarain, the instructor. She began the session by asking if anyone had any type of injury or illness, in order to adapt the exercises appropriately to each one’s needs; with no response from anyone, she began the class. We began breathing and warming up the body bit by bit. That is where one begins to note the difference between her, the instructor, and oneself. While she was doing everything gracefully, and seemingly without much effort; I could see myself in the mirror and it looked as if someone were greasing up “Robotina” (Rosie, the robot maid from the Jetsons).

It was interesting when, in doing I don’t know what pose, the instruction of Mariana was followed by a series of pops emitting from my body: crack, crack, crack, crack…climbing up until reaching my face, red with embarrassment. Then she said “listen to your body” and mine responded, “…let’s see if you bring me here more often.” My friend told me that her body cried out, as from an ad for “Lonol” (pain killer).

The instructor’s voice was comforting, it soothed me. I had not slept for a few days and was afraid that in one of the poses I would fall into Morpheus’ arms, and perhaps even snore, disturbing the peace of the other beautiful ladies who had no reason to bear the brunt of my sleepless nights. Yet, even when my mind relaxed and rested, it was alert. I felt my body active and elastic, even though still now when I pull open a door my wrist pops (bit by bit, Rome was not built in a day).

The class was quite simple (fortunately), but for me it was like medicine; I floated out of there. At the end of the class, I had the opportunity to speak briefly with Mariana. She told me she in fact has been doing yoga her entire life as her mom is a yoga master; there being different branches of yoga she concentrated more on that of body exercise, that of Hatha Yoga. She also teaches dance, and is a dancer. I suppose these disciplines go hand in hand.

MG_3901-413x620 Yoga-izing PeñascoAt the recently opened Peñasco Fitness Center, Mariana teaches the yoga class Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 10 a.m., Saturdays at 9 a.m., and Pilates on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9 a.m.

“I loved the show up for today. There were a lot of people for this being a first class and honestly it would be ideal, if someone were looking to begin Yoga, that they sign up as we are going to begin with the basics, come Monday (Oct. 1),” commented Mariana. (Though interested individuals can come to any class)

Hearing this was a relief, as there may be more than one that thinks going to such a class means getting tied up in knots with complicated poses, such as those that stream across the TV at times and which upon seeing for a few seconds leaves you amazed, because you did not even know the body could do origami.

“No,” she calmly said, “That is not going to happen. Everyone has their own rhythm and we are going to begin little by little, like the class today. I don’t want anyone to get discouraged.”

My friend and I were both enchanted with the class. Without saying a word we knew that Yoga, definitely, has to be on the agenda and become part of the weekly activities. In my case, it will help me rest and not bite anyone’s head off…I hope.

In addition to yoga, the Peñasco Fitness Center offers other classes including Pilates, Zumba and Zumba “Lite”, which I’m told is less demanding as the normal Zumba classes (or rather, for those who like to dance but do not want a class after it seems the teacher had taken turbo with Red Bull).  Monthly memberships at Peñasco Fitness Center are $28 USD, or you may opt for individual classes at $3 USD each.

Well, I know we all can’t make the same times, or there may be different interests in doing yoga and fortunately, in addition to the classes at Peñasco Fitness Center, there are extra options around town: at 6 a.m. there is a daily class with Avril Noriega on the Mirador Beach (at the end of Sinaloa St.) with a monthly cost of 350 pesos. On Saturdays, she leads a free class at 6 a.m. in the same spot (More information: 638 112 7020 [bilingual]). Another option is from 7 – 8 p.m. with Victoria Sanger, just off Sinaloa St. and behind the Rocky Point Chinese Restaurant (Information: 638 380 6355 [bilingual]). In addition, there are classes at the Casa de la Cultura (across from City Hall) from 8 – 8:45 p.m. More information (cell): 638 103 4235, or at the Municipal Public Library 383 3323.

So, there are no more excuses. Take advantage and don’t let the rolling tide of fads affect this healthy practice.
