Welcome 2014! Here we are, nearing the end of our first full week in the New Year! Whales have already been spotted off the coasts of Puerto Peñasco, providing an extra draw to our winter waters and a great reminder of the “world’s aquarium” just beyond our door. Be sure to check with local tour companies about upcoming trips out at sea! And now, it’s time once more to Rundown the Weekend, so let’s get to it:

CEDO Environmental Movie Night – 7 p.m. / Cine en el CEDO (normalmente el primer jueves de cada mes) CEDO Field Station in Las Conchas. Good to jot this down in your calendar as CEDO offers a FREE film night every 1st Thursday of the month (yes, we know this is the 2nd Thursday…so it’s an exception).
David Aguilar in Concert 8 p.m. Municipal Auditorium (across from City Hall) 60 pesos or 150 pesos VIP front-rows Come out and enjoy an evening of guitar music with singer/songwriter David Aguilar as he begins to wrap up his “tour” sponsored in great part by Fondeadora (Mexico’s first “crowdfunding” platform).
Jan. 14th Uncommon Women on Common Ground 5:30 p.m. Beach Bum in Malecón (Gatherings every 2nd Tuesday of the month in spots around town – socialize, learn about local information, charity fundraising)
CHOPPS Chili Cook-off and Swap Meet 10 a.m. Playa de Oro RV Park. Swap Meet fundraiser to go to Santa Claus Club. Concurso de “chili” estilo Tex-Mex y gran venta de garage 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Playa de Oro RV Park.
Yard Sale – American Legion – gran venta de patio 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. en el Mirador
5th Annual Major League Coaches Clinic (press conference 6 p.m. at The Hut)
5th Annual Major League Coaches Clinic Baseball clinics to be held throughout day at main baseball stadium next to Plaza la Madre (entrance to town)
CASI Chili Cook-off 10 a.m. Playa de Oro RV Park Fundraising proceeds go to Escuela La Montaña – Concurso de “chili” estilo Tex-Mex presentado por la Sociedad Internacional de Apreciación de Chili (CASI)
6th Annual CBSC Golf Tournament Torneo de Golf presentado por Cholla Bay Sportsmen’s Club 8:30 a.m. Laguna del Mar $75 US
Mermaid’s Arts Market – Mercado de la Sirena (artesañías) 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Plaza del Camarón (Mermaid’s Market scheduled every 1st and 3rd Saturday October through May, subject to changes when other events take over the Plaza) Se programa el Mercado de la Sirena cada 1er y 3er sábado del mes, de octubre a mayo (salvo cuando haya otros eventos programados en la Plaza)

CINEMARTES – Tuesday nights are independent film nights presented by Cine Club Primera Toma, A.C. highlighting mostly films from international festivals. Held on the patio at Café Puerto Viejo Tostadores (across from Thrifty’s in the Old Port). Usually starts around 8 / 8:30 p.m.

American Legion January Calendar
The American Legion Post MX 15 is located in the Mirador (below Juanes) and tells us they’ve got corn-hole tournaments every Monday at 2 p.m., plus a casserole challenge coming up (Jan. 22nd) along with a Yard Sale (Jan. 17th & 18th). Fundraising at the American Legion Post MX 15 helps them with food basket distribution activities. Stop by the post for a monthly calendar.
Cholla Bay Sportsmen’s Club
Activities from the CBSC this Winter/Spring include: Jan. 18th 6th Annual CBSC Golf Tournament, 50s Sock-Hop Feb. 1st, Casino Game Night March 1st 59th Annual Fishing Derby (March, April, and May), 7th Annual Horseshoe Tournament with pre-game day Fiesta (April 4th & 5th)
February: Taste of Peñasco (Feb. 15th)
March: Races on the beach (ATV / Bike / UTV (March 1st) AZ Spring Break! March Madness golf at Mayan Palace ….
