Weekend Rundown Viva México!

mex-flag Weekend Rundown Viva México!Following a dramatic beginning to September, accompanied with blustery winds and rain last week, the sky has cleared over Puerto Peñasco just in time for the upcoming Mexican Independence Day holiday! In addition to the popular official Mexican Independence festivities on the evening of Sept. 15th in front of City Hall, there are fun activities set to take place across town.  Beginning early Sat., Sept. 15th, look for roads around City Hall to be blocked off as food-stands, folk-art, and others begin to set up near the intersection of Blvd. Fremont and Blvd. Juarez just under the green, white, and red flags flying overhead.  On Sat. evening, the traditional Grito (Independence Cry) will ring out from City Hall, honoring the beginning of Mexico’s call to Independence in 1810.

sept15-fiesta-english-394x620 Weekend Rundown Viva México! If you prefer to take in the fiesta atmosphere from another venue, RPR Mexico and Chango’s Bar have hooked up to offer their Independence Day Fiesta from 8 p.m. – 2 a.m. @ Chango’s, right near the entrance to the Sonoran Spa, Sonoran Sea, and Las Palmas complexes. Cover $120 pesos ($12 US) kids $70 pesos ($7 US).  Or, you may choose an Independence Day evening at a number of restaurants around town offering dishes in an assortment of traditional red, white, and green embellishments. VIVA MEXICO!!

Of particular note this weekend, following elections in July, the new Mayor will be sworn in on Sept. 16th – usually during a ceremony that in the past has been held at the Civic Auditorium near City Hall.

If looking for adventure, look to CEDO’s NaturArte Eco tours with either a Friday evening or early Sat. morning tidepool adventure,  or a Sunday Independence Day excursion to Bird Island (Contact CEDO for details). Keep in mind CEDO also offers Free Natural History Talks each week in Spanish and English (Tuesdays: 2 p.m. English, 4 p.m. Spanish;  Saturdays: 2 p.m. Spanish, English 4 p.m.).

Additional adventure opportunities may include Stand-Up-Paddelboards (SUP) near Playa Bonita, or a host of activities available on the beach near Las Palomas at EcoFun’s new palapa stop! Looking for movies www.citicinemas.com (select Puerto Peñasco – and under Todos los complejos again select Puerto Peñasco) (Sub = subtitles in Spanish, Dob = dubbed in Spanish).
