Baseball is back! After a two win streak on opening weekend, the Tiburones of Puerto Peñasco are ready for a great season that, as Sports Director Alfredo Guzmán explains, could go through August given the play-offs. This season, the Tiburones are part of the 7-team Liga Norte de México, a development league for aspiring players headed to the much sought after Mexican League. LNM is the third strongest league in Mexico.
The 24 member Tiburones squad, which includes 4 players from Venezuela and 1 from the Dominican Republic, faced off against the Rojos of Caborca on Friday, April 1st, in Caborca, claiming a victory of 13-7. The next night, April 2nd, Tiburones welcomed the Rojos to Puerto Peñasco for the first home game of the 2016 season, again overtaking the Rojos 7-4. Upcoming home games are April 8th – 10th, again against Rojos de Caborca.
Game times at the Francisco León García Stadium, next to Plaza la Madre, are approximately 7:30 p.m and tickets are 40 pesos for bleachers / 60 peses for seats behind bullpens and home plate. Multiple passes are available at a cost of 1500 pesos for bleachers / 2500 pesos for seats (play-off games not included in passes). The stadium itself has a capacity for up to 1500 and Tiburones board president Terencio Gutiérrez, along with Sports Director Alfredo Guzmán and Tiburones manager Pablo Machiria invite folk to come out all season to support the Tiburones. Guzmán noted, it has been a battle to keep baseball in Puerto Peñasco but this year, along with help from the local administration in providing needed maintenance to the stadium, the team of young players is definitely promising. During a press conference prior to opening weekend, Puerto Peñasco mayor Kiko Munro remarked his goal is that baseball in Peñasco become self-sustaining and by next year the city be able to offer a first-rate stadium, one that will continue to attract tourism.
At the opening home game on April 2nd, Mayor Munro threw out the first pitch after an inaugural ceremony that included recognition of Arturo “Kaliman” Rodríguez, Jaime López, Cornelio García, Carlos Mexia and Alfredo Guzmán, for their contributions to Mexican baseball.
