Manuel-recolectando-arena-negra-de-la-playa-620x462 The Sand Man / Sand PainterDrawn to the profound color he found in black sand, and the contrast this forms with white, Manuel Martínez Peña – who will soon be displaying his work at a gallery in Paris, France (as well as at this weekend’s Jazz & Art Festival) – has found his own style of creating images molded in sand.

This manual work, which became a “hobby” as the artist himself explains, began just three years ago. Though this has been a relatively short time, it has been sufficient to bring life to faces such as María Félix, Marilyn Monroe, and Frida Kahlo, as well as to a dozen nudes, abstract images, and a series of paintings that form part of just over forty pieces of work.

Though Manuel Martínez works within the hotel industry, he gives himself space to create when an idea comes to mind. Yet first, he must work for hours and days to collect the black sand that is nothing more than magnetite produced in veins after a process of beach erosion. He collects the sand with magnets to then take back to his study and so begin his artwork.

“I find beauty here, it can be monochromatic, elegant; nevertheless, I don’t block myself into black and white, I like colors and continue contrasting. I begin to create my own colors, grinding rocks in the most primitive manner. I understand how the sands form – here, this one is beige. If you take the sand, you will find many colors: turquoise, white, there’s red from Cerro de la Ballena (Whale Hill), there is a vein that goes to the sea,” describes the artist, still wearing his shirt from the “Tessoro” complex where he currently works as manager.

Manuel grew up in a family with artistic roots as his mother was the first to create a dance school in Nuevo León, at just 12 years old, and is also a painter. Manuel, along with his siblings, inherited this desire. A sister, who will also be exhibiting her work in Paris, France, has a selection displayed online at artslant.com, which promotes more than 280,000 artists around the world.

“I found out about the call for this exhibition through this page. The most interesting thing is that they asked for pieces in miniature, measuring 22 x 16 centimeters, which is easier because of the cost and transport to France. There are hundreds of pieces that are going to the contest entitled “A simple grain of rice,” explains Martínez.  “I saw the call for work on Memuco’s page [an internationally renowned artist originally from Puerto Peñasco now working abroad though with a local exhibit on Oct. 18th].  He also entered the contest, but in a different category,” explains the Sand Man who will represent Mexico with his work entitled “Just a pair of grains of sand,” referring to the earth and the moon.

“The exhibit,” details Manuel, “will be at the Metanoia Gallery in Paris from November 1 – 14 and those attending the event will themselves vote for the best among 250 pieces to be shown.”

More locally, Martinez Peña will be displaying a selection of work at the 5th Jazz & Art Festival (Oct. 11 – 13). His pieces may be found during the Festival in the Lobby of the Hotel Peñasco de Sol over the three days.  The painter indicates he will be mounting a few new creations for this exhibit, which also includes asking previous buyers for pieces in order to show them.

He has also shown his work in Payson, Arizona, and at the Barón Balché winery in the Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California.

Manuel Martínez has managed to price his work from $100 dollars for the initial pieces to larger canvases that have gone for a thousand dollars and that currently decorate offices, restaurants, as well as halls, and the walls of luxurious condominiums.

In addition to the time spent collecting sand – which is about four days, Manuel spends as much time as he can on a piece, that both his work and energy will allow. Sometimes, for larger pieces, he can spend various hours working over a span of weeks.

The Sand Painter (calling himself Sand Man), assuredly says he has found his passion in this particular manner of painting and hopes the time will come that galleries themselves will ask for his work, though he knows there is still a long road to follow to achieve this goal.
