SAM_9838-620x349 Shrimp season fully begins 9/19!As of 6 a.m. on Sept. 19th the 2012-13 shrimping season along the Pacific Coast and Gulf of California will be fully underway. The season, which ended around mid-March, reopened to small boats on the 13th, who will now be joined by the rest of the shrimp fleet.  The decision as to when to reopen shrimp capture is handed down by the National Commission of Fishing and Aquaculture (CONAPESCA), who take numerous factors into consideration following studies each summer to analyze the size and abundance of shrimp in various areas along Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

According to CONAPESCA, the area to open up fully on Sept. 19th includes that from Mexico’s northern border with the U.S. down to Mazatlán, Sinaloa, with the exception of the Biosphere Reserve area of the Upper Gulf of California and Rio Colorado Delta.  Fishing in the Reserve area, according to CONAPESCA, will open on Sept. 25, while on Sept. 29th the season will extend into waters along the southern stretch of Mexico’s Pacific coast, from Mazatlán to the border with Guatemala.
