In encouraging what are certainly international life changing experiences, the local Rotary Club (CR Mar de Peñasco, AC) is pleased to welcome the club’s first students as part of the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program. The true exchange nature is further highlighted with the first three students from Puerto Peñasco also setting out on a year-long adventure, as pioneers in establishing the local club’s participation in the over 5 decades long global exchange program.
AnaMaida Rivas, local Youth Exchange Officer (YEO) for the Puerto Peñasco Rotary Club, detailed this year three recent graduates from CIMA secondary school are taking part in Rotary Youth Exchange, with one student headed to Germany in coming days, another readying for travel to Brazil, and another who has already begun her exchange year also in Brazil. Two of these “outbounds” had the opportunity to welcome the new “inbounds” who arrived in Puerto Peñasco on Sunday, August 6th, following an induction course in Ensenada with the nearly 50 Rotary Exchange students housed across Rotary District 4100 for the 2017-2018 academic year.
The “sobrinos” (nieces and nephew) of the local Rotary club include two students from Brazil, and another from Germany. Each of the eager young travelers are excited about starting their Rotary year, during which they will become a true part of their host families, attend school, pursue hobbies (from sports to theater, new foods, and language), take part in activities of the host Rotary Club, and above all share in the richness of cultural exchange.
Rotary Club President Maria Dolores “Loly” Monteverde Sesma emphasized how proud she is of the local club in stepping into the exchange program this year! She added, as this first RYE experience begins, students and families interested in participating in the Rotary Exchange Program in the future are asked to contact the local club as soon as possible as the process for 2018-2019 begins now and initial deadlines for paperwork, etc. are as early as October. The program, sponsored by Rotary Clubs in more than 100 countries, is open to outstanding students (15-18) who are leaders in their schools and communities.
