Rotary Club begins year with vision and dental clinics

The local Rotary Club of Puerto Peñasco (CR Mar de Peñasco, AC), in conjunction with VISTAMERICA and the dental project “Alas de Amor”, began 2017 by benefiting hundreds of children, teens, and adults via a dental clinic and distribution of eyeglasses.

The group “Alas de Amor” of organizer Roy Bryant from Phoenix, AZ, together with dental students from both Arizona and the University of Buffalo in New York, in coordination with the local Rotary Club, saw nearly 350 people over the two-day free clinic held at space provided by the Church of Latter Day Saints.  Patients ranging from 5 to 70 years old received services consisting mostly of cleaning, fillings, and extractions.  Video:  Alas de Amor Jan 2017

In a separate activity, though over the same weekend of Jan. 13th-14th, Rotary Club members took part in distributing over 130 pairs of glasses to children in Puerto Peñasco via the annual project of local business ViStAMERICA.  VISTAMERICA itself provided the frames and made the graduated lenses for each child.

The VISTAMERICA project performed initial vision exams in November with assistance of local Rotary Club members who, armed with eye charts, visited area schools prior to the November clinic to help select students who could benefit from the free eyeglass program.

On Friday, January 13th, the new frames and individualized lenses were distributed to the students benefiting from this year’s VISTAMERICA program, which in all totaled over 130.  Photos: Loli Monteverde
