Puerto Peñasco Open Chess Tournament  April 28th-30th

At least 100 chess competitors from across Sonora, Baja California, and Arizona are expected to take part in the Sonora Open Chess Championship to be held April 28th– 30th in Puerto Peñasco.

The Sonora Chess Open, named in honor of teacher and avid chess promoter Carlos Ham Lugo, will take place at the Puerto Peñasco Expo Convention Center and is a classifying step for the National Chess Open to be held in Aguascalientes in August this year.

There is an open call for chess participants to sign up within the five categories including: Open and Amateur, as well as age categories for under 18, under 14, and under 10. There is a modest registration fee with a cash prize pool of 30,000 pesos.

The 2023 Puerto Peñasco Sonora Open Chess Championship is made possible through the Municipal Administration, National Chess Federation of Mexico, the Sonora Sports Commission, Sonora Chess players Association, and the Puerto Peñasco Chess Club.

The Puerto Peñasco Chess Club meets at the Municipal Library on Blvd. Juarez (located across from City Hall and next to Casa de Cultura) as follows:  Thursdays 6 pm – 8 pm Blitz,  Fridays 6 pm – 9 pm Classic, and Saturdays 9 am – 1 pm Rapid. Open to all! All encouraged to bring a chess board to share.
