The Pinacate Skate Park, sponsored by Levi Strauss & Co. and sole of its kind in Mexico with international competition standards, was inaugurated in Puerto Peñasco on Saturday, July 2nd.
With an investment of $130,000 USD, which included land donated by the city for the park, the not fully completed facility aims to place itself at a level that, given its design, could be used by skate board aficionados for both national and international competitions.
Built at the corner of Calle 18 and Plutarco Elías Calles (just down from Calle 13 when headed toward Sandy Beach), the spot was made possible through efforts such as those of promoter and project coordinator Braulio Castro in seeing that Puerto Peñasco be chosen over other cities, including Tijuana and Mexico City, as the ideal spot to build the skate park.
Castro emphasized after six years of proposals and discussions with numerous local officials, the skate park is finally a reality and becomes the 6th global park that Levi Strauss & Co. has sponsored, following Bolivia, the United States, New Zealand, South Africa, and India.
Construction on the park was done at all necessary standards for professional skateboarding competitions by recreating urban environments, while a special element lies in the center in representation of El Pinacate.
Braulio Castro indicated plans are already in the works for a first international skateboard competition to take place here in October, which would bring together participants from Canada, the U.S., South America, and Mexico while promoting Puerto Peñasco as a skate board destination.
Peñasco mayor Kiko Munro detailed a second phase of the project the City will inlude equipping the facility with a perimeter fence, lighting, and bathrooms, along with various murals to be done by a collective of local artists.
Seventeen year old Aldo Gabriel Reyes Limón of Puerto Peñasco was applauded at the event in having picked up, as of a few months ago, sponsorship by Levi’s and in having already represented Puerto Peñasco in both national and international competitions in Monterrey, Las Vegas, New York, San Francisco, Tijuana, and Montreal, among other areas.
Mayor Munro wished Reyes Limón the best of success at his upcoming competition, the Copenhagen Open, to be held August 10 – 14 in Denmark’s capital.
Along with construction of the park, Levi’s filmed a documentary of the process for publicity and marketing purposes, which includes different locations in Puerto Peñasco. An advance of the documentary is to be presented in Denmark!
